Rising
Prologue — Moravia — 1490
“Do you think it survived?” Marcus asked
“Nothing could have survived that” Milos said, satisfied. He turned to the rest of the mounted men

A black ooze ran from the clumps of meat. It followed a course down the hill, towards the rivulet.
The Water — 1500
Jana was in her late teens. She had been promised to Otto, but for now she was content to run through the green hills—still ‘free’.
Jana frolicked. She sang to herself. It was the height of summer.
Jana looked down at the lake below. Cool. Inviting. She raced herself down the hill.
And the water was cool. She dipped her toes into it and then, feeling a little playful removed her white linen clothes.
Naked, she tentatively stepped back into the water from a small gentle embankment.
She frolicked about. Ducks were honking near-by. The water felt delicious against her smooth white skin.
She head a duck screech. She spun around to see it disappear backwards under the water.
She noticed a black slick floating on top of the water.
Then she noticed somehow it propelled itself towards her.
She spun around and started to skip away from it to the water’s edge.
It caught up to her, touching her ankle. She screamed in pain as if burned.
She fell forward, still partly in the water. She slick slid up her, over the back of her legs. She cried… but there was no one to help.
Jana clawed her way from the water, but the slick stuck to her, and continued up her body, like a oily glove.
And then, it somehow pressed into her, between her legs. She cried in pain, spinning around to watch it push into her. It disappeared into her.
She screamed again in pain and fell unconscious.
She woke. It was dark. She sat up. Her stomach bulged as if a few months pregnant.
She got up, walked into the water and washed herself. Then, returning to the embankment she dressed and made her way home.
When she opened the wooden latch on her cottage door her mom Vlada leapt to her feet. Otto was there too.
“Miláček!” Otto cried.
“Where were you, baby?” Vlada said embracing her “We were worried”
“I went for a swim” Jana said as she broke out of her mom’s embrace and went to the fireplace.
“Your mother and I…” Otto began
“I’m hungry” Jana said as she looked into the large iron cooking pot.
“Let me get you some bread” Vlada said as Jana scooped the broth into a plate
“Why are you here?” she turned to Otto
“I came… because your mother was looking for you…”

Vlada looked at Otto embarrassed

“Goodbye”he said to Vlada

“Are you going to stand there all day, mother?” Jana said annoyed
Vlada closed the door and then watched through the window as Otto headed off
Vlada turned to scold her daughter when she noticed the bulge in her belly
“Have you been eating all day?”
Jana looked down at her stomach and smiled.
“I have to go to bed now” Jana said

Before she could say anything Jana brushed past her and went to her room.
Jana peeled her clothes off. She looked at herself in the mirror. Her veins were marked and black. She smiled, realising that the stuff with her vagina was now seeping through her whole body too.
Coursing through her veins… the evil ran. Jana went to bed, she fell asleep as soon as she lay down her head.

“Quick, you must push!” Vlada said as she got beside her daughter and took her by the hand
Jana’s breathing was hard and fast
“You must push!”

Vlada saw the head emerge, then she shifted around to help deliver it. She drew the baby out and slapped its back

“It’s a boy!” Vlada laughed with joy
“A boy?” Jana sighed
“Yes, it’s a miracle!” Vlada said, as she still didn’t understand how it had happened.
“Let me hold him” Jana said
“I’ll get some cloths” Vlada said
Jana took her ‘son’ in her arms and gazed down at him lovingly
Vlada rushed back and helped clean up
“What will you call him?”
“Jan” Jana said
“Jan” Vlada smiled
“Oh look” Vlada grinned, I think he’s hungry…
Jana put Jan onto her breast with her mom’s instructions. Jan drew heavy on her.
Vlada went back to get some sheets too.
When she returned she was shocked again
Jan was still on the breast. But now he was larger, the size of a seven year old boy.
“What’s the matter, mother?” Jana said as if nothing were wrong
“What is this?” Jan said, “Is this the work of the devil?”
“Yes” Jana smiled, “He is my master”
“What?” Vlada cried, making a sign over her with her hand.
Jan rose up off Jana. He was taller again. He looked perfectly human, other than the large appendage hanging from between his legs…. and the fact the umbilicus was still connected from his stomach to his mother.
Jana eased off the bed too. She stood behind him
“What evil is this?” Vlada said
“He is my Master” Jana smiled, “And now he will be yours too!”
“No’’
“I am an ancient being in this new body” Jan said, “I do not know quite what I am”
“You are a devil”
“Yes, I believe I am” he smiled as he loomed over her. He grabbed the umbilical cord at his stomach and tore it open
Jana winced… it was painful for her because they were still connected as ‘one’.
“Stay away from me!” Vlada threatened.
She looked up into his face and trembled as he smiled.

“I think it’s time” she said, patting her swollen stomach
Vlada turned to Anna “Fetch your sisters, and half-sisters!” she said “Jana is going to have her fourth child”
“This is good news” Vlada said as she got up and followed her daughter back into the house
She stopped at the doorway and pattered her own swollen stomach. It would not be long before she was due.
