“I’m so glad you’re letting me stay” Kay said
“You’ve already said that” Josh said, rubbing Kay’s knee
“And Lisa?” Kay asked
“What about her?”
“What’s your wife said about me staying”
“Lisa’s fine”
“You sure” Kay asked
“Why wouldn’t she be…?”
“Well you don’t exactly have a big place…”
“It’s ‘compact’” Josh smiled
“So how’s she going to feel with your big sister hanging around?”
“We’ll make do” Josh said
“I’ll try not to get in the way”
“You’re never in the way, Sis” he said
“Just in case, I brought ear-plugs”
“Ear-plugs?”
“Yes”
“Why?”
“Because of last time”
“What happened last time?”
“Josh! Josh! Josh” she moaned, impersonating Lisa “Oh, yesss… oh, yessss”
“Stop it!” Josh play slapped her

“So, I brought ear-plugs” she said
“I don’t think you’ll need them”
“What?” she gasped, “You two….?”
“We’ve not done it for a while”
“How long?” she said “If you don’t mind me asking?”
“Five months”
“Five fucking months?” she gasped
He nodded
“No way” she said
“Yep”
“You need a mercy hump” she said

And sure enough another vehicle… this time a pick-up truck roared past
As it did Kay made out the figure of a couple of guys in the back

“They’re fucking morons”
“Yeah… but they’ve all got guns”

“Yes” she said “About a half dozen of them…”
“Weird” he said
“So…?” he began changing the subject “How long have you erm… had writer’s block?”
“A year”
“A year” he gasped “Fuck”
“Yes” she said
“The great Kay McCord… mistress of horror”
“And sci-fi”
“You branched out?”
“My last five books were about aliens” she said incredulously
“Oh”
“Did you read them?” she sighed “I’ve been sending you each new volume..”
“I…” he saiid “Well…”
“And if you’re not fucking your wife… then what are you doing with all your time?”
“I do work too you know”
“Comic book artist is not really work”
“Neither is writing B-grade…”
“Don’t say something you’re gonna…”
“What the hell’s that?” he said and he strained to look ahead
There was a red glow
As they drew closer they realised that a car had come off the road.
They slowed down.
The pick-up had stopped and pulled up half-on half-off the road
A group of armed men were scouring about, including looking over the crashed car
A couple of them leered at the McCord siblings as they slowed down to look
Josh almost came to a stop when one man started to approach
“Lock the door” Kay said
“What?”
“Lock it”
Josh locked it and rolled gently away
The man stopped, turned around and went back
“What was that about?”
“The tire…” Kay said
“What about it?”
“It’d been shot out”
“How do you know?”
“I did a research trip on a novel with the local PD” she said
They sped up a little
About half a mile down the road they saw a woman running, but with a limp
They pulled up next to her
She seemed frightened of them
“Shh” Kay said as she got out, “We’re not here to hurt you”
Then they saw that the woman appeared about seven months pregnant.
“You stay away”
“We’re not here to hurt you” Kay said again as she cooed and slowly reached out
“Help me” the disheveled woman said
“Okay, sure” Kay said. She turned to her brother “Help me get her into the car”
“Man not touch me!” she said
“What?” Josh gasped
“I don’t think she wants you to touch her”
“Alright”
“I’ll manage” Kay said and she guided the woman into the back of the car
She closed the door on the woman and then got into her seat and closed it too, but she didn’t do the seat-belt on so she could sit half turned around; keeping an eye on the woman.
Josh drove
“Hi” Kay said, “I’m Kay and this is Josh”
“You married?”
“No” Kay laughed “This is my brother”
“You no married?”
“No”
“You just said so…” Josh began
“Shhh” she said to her brother “What’s your name?”
“I am Layer”
“Leah?”
“Layer” the woman said “I do this”
“Okay” she said.
“What are we going to do?” she asked
“We can’t take her to town”
“Why not?”
“It’s back that way” he said
“Right. I see”
“We’ll have to take her home”
“Lisa will really flip”
“And we can see about getting to town in the daylight”
“Do you want to come home with us?” Kay asked
Leah nodded
“Good… it’s settled”
Lisa was not happy. She pointed out that the armed guys who were after Leah could end up at their farm. And Leah creeped her out
Josh took down his double-barrel gun and loaded it. He would be on ‘watch’….
Josh was partly asleep when he was woken by footsteps, soft as they were.
“Shit!” he gasped when he saw Leah
She wore a plain dress that Lisa had leant her. She fit in it perfectly, except she had a larger bust than the original owner.
“You scared me” he said
“I no sleep” she said
He was perplexed by her strange working, as have had been since they first met.
“Are you worried?” he asked
She shook her head
“I need layer” she said
He frowned.
He noticed a viscous liquid drip on the floor between her legs
He tried not to look, for embarrassment
She noticed it
She turned and left him
“Fuck” he gasped to himself as he relaxed into his sofa-chair by the front door, still cradling his Remington
Leah went to the back of the house and sniffed the air. She smiled. She didn’t notice a tail of juice left on the floorboards from where she had walked
Leah opened the door and stepped in
Lisa tossed and turned on her back.

A pool of liquid dripped onto the wooden floor board
Suddenly ‘splat’
A small rubbery shape fell out of Leah’s cunt
She picked it up
It was gelatinous, translucent.
You could see through it’s olive green skin to a mass throbbing inside.
Leah went over to the bed and placed the ‘egg’ down at the foot of the bed.
The rubbery ball began to stretch

A orange/red worm writhed. It was as if it was sniffing the air. And it sensed what it needed and began, like an inch-worm, moving up the bed between Lisa’s legs
It sensed her warmth.
It craved her wet embrace.

Lisa rose and made breakfast
“Good morning” she said to Kay when she came into the kitchen
“Er…” Kay yawned “Good morning”
“I’ve just made pancakes” Lisa chirped
“Ah…” Kay said surprised
“Sit down, please” Lisa continued to chirp

Leah came in and sat down “Good morning” Lisa smiled at her
“Morning” Leah said as she sat down gingerly
“What’s going on here?” Kay asked as Lisa served her up breakfast
“Nothing… why?”
“Just you seem so….”
“Reborn?” Lisa said
“Reborn?”
“Yes” Lisa said “I have a new purpose now”
“A new purpose?”
“Yes” Lisa smiled and returned to her cooking
Kay looked at Leah. Leah smiled weakly. Under the kitchen table she opened her legs as a small amount of fluid leaked from her.
“Say” Lisa said, “I heard you got writer’s block”
“You heard?” Kay sighed, expecting a barrage of insults
“I have an idea for a book”
“You do?” Kay said, bored. She was sick of it. It was like how everyone goes up to a professional comic to tell them a joke they think is really funny
“Do you want to hear it?”
“Ah, yeah, sure” Kay said insincerely
“It’s about aliens”
“Wow” Kay checked her sarcasm levels
“They’re like a parasite” Lisa continued. “They nest inside women hosts, and control them”
Kay’s ears pricked up. It wasn’t the idea as much as hearing her sister-in-law mention such tings
“Go on”
“And they nest inside the women and make them ovulate”
“Ah ha”
“And they seed the woman’s eggs, and she then falls pregnant with more aliens and spreads these to other women”
Kay had to admit that was an interesting idea
“They are the perfect being” Lisa said, “They never need to leave the host as long as she keeps producing viable eggs for them to fertilise”
“Okay” Kay said
“Do you require another pancake?” Lisa said
“Require?” Kay said
“You need nourishment”
“Say ladies…” Josh said, “Do I smell pancakes?”
“Yes” Kay said
He went to Lisa and she pulled away from him “Don’t touch me” she snapped
Josh was taken aback by this
And for Kay she was surprised. She didn’t realise that the relationship was so bad.
“I just want to…” he began
“Don’t touch me… you… you… disgusting man”
“I…” Josh was hurt
He instead retreated
“So?” Lisa asked as if nothing had happened “Do you require another pancake?”
“What just happened?” Kay asked
“You need nourishment” Lisa repeated
“Why are you so mean to my brother”
“Men are no longer relevant” Lisa smiled, “Pancake?”
“I’m not hungry anymore” Kay rose and went to look for her brother
Lisa felt a bead of viscous fluid flow down her inner thigh
“You are now a drone” Leah said
“Yes” Lisa said
“You will be ready in a few days” Leah said, “Your body will morph”
“It already has…” Lisa said
“Good” Leah said “As drone you will protect layer”
“Yes” Lisa said “I serve to protect layer”
“Drone will help protect the hive”
“Yes” Lisa said. “And what about Kay?”
“I will spawn tonight and she will be one of us by morning” Leah said
“Good” Lisa smiled as she picked up the plate with the half eaten pancakes and took it to the sink
“And my husband?”
“He can be disposed of” Leah said “We don’t want him trying to hurt our masters”
“No” Lisa said agreeing “He must be disposed of…Drones dispose of men who threaten the nest”
“When Kay is one of us you will dispose of him then”
“Yes”
Leah rose from her chair and went to Lisa. She touched Lisa’s cheek. Lisa smiled.
“We are one” Leah said
