The Fraternity — Chapter 1-D

By GoingDeep

Adam stood outside the shop for a few moments before gathering up enough courage to go inside. He’d never been inside of a cigar shop before, but knew that this is part of the initiation and he had to go through with it. Pledging a fraternity was something he had always thought about doing, but now that he had done it, he wasn’t so sure it was for him. Last night he was told what his first task was going to be, it seemed simple enough, head down to the local cigar shop, buy a couple of cigars, and bring them back. He’d never smoked a cigar before, and hoped he wouldn’t have to smoke these, but he’d cross that bridge when he came to it. Taking a deep breath and steeling himself, he turned to the door of the shop, and entered.

The inside of the shop had an interesting scent to it. He could smell dozens of different scents all combining into one overall sweet aroma. The man at the counter looked up as he entered. He was tall about 6′ 4″ tall, broad shouldered, about 45 years old, with a nicely trimmed beard and mustache, brown hair, and brown beard. He looked sort of like a lumberjack, with a very fit and muscular body, that obviously showed that he liked to workout at the gym. He had broad shoulders and a large chest that stretched at the shirt he wore. The big man smiled as he looked up from his work. Adam was a bit nervous, but had worked out what he would say. He didn’t quite feel comfortable going in asking for cigars, after all he had just turned 21 years old a couple weeks ago. But, he walked up to the man and began his rehearsed routine.

MARK MEETS ADAM

“Hi. I’m looking to purchase a couple cigars for a friend of mine who recently started smoking them. I’m not sure what kind he smokes, but I don’t think it much matters as he’s just a beginner.”, said the young man that entered into the shop. He was perhaps in his early twenties. Local college student most likely, Mark thought. Mark nodded his understanding. The young man continued, “Since I’m sure he’s going to want to smoke them while I’m around, to thank me and let me know if he likes them, I don’t want them to have a harsh scent.” Again, Mark nodded. “What would you recommend?”, the young man finished.

“How old is your friend?", Mark asked. “Is he your age?”

They young man took a tentative breath, and said “Yes, he and I both just pledged to a fraternity on campus.” Again Mark smiled, extended his hand and introduced himself, “Hello there, my name is Mark. What’s your name?”

“Adam”, Adam responded.

“Nice to meet you Adam. Which fraternity did you pledge?", Mark asked, already knowing the answer. And so the conversation began. As expected Mark knew which fraternity Adam had pledged, and he began a friendly banter to put Adam at ease.

“You know,” Mark said, “I was a member of that fraternity when I was your age. It wasn’t much of a fraternity back then, very few members and not very popular. But during my time on campus, we built it up and became one of the most popular fraternities around.” This surprised Adam, and he thought to himself that he might be able to find out a little bit more about the fraternity from Mark. He had only known that it was one of the more popular fraternities on campus, and that all of the guys there really seemed to enjoy being a part of it. So much so, that Adam decided to give it a try.

“So,“Adam began, “what cigars would you suggest?”

“Well, there are several that have a sweet aroma that you, er, your friend might enjoy. Just follow me.” Mark turned, opened the door and entered into a very nice humidor. Mark walked over to a couple of the boxes and extracted a cigar from each. He drew each of them across his nostrils, inhaling their scent as he did so. He then turned and handed one of the cigars to Adam. Adam did just as Mark had, checking out the scent of each one. He then looked up at Mark with a questioning glance. “They smell nice, but do they have the same scent when they’re burning?", he asked.

Mark smiled and said “Well, why don’t we go out and try them, and you tell me.” Once outside, Mark reached below the counter and pulled out a cutter and a lighter. He then looked at Adam and asked, “Do you know how to properly clip and light a cigar?” Adam shook his head as he said, “No.” “Well, I guess it’s time for you to learn. So you don’t look inexperienced in front of your friend, that is.” Mark said.

“First off, the end of the cigar that goes into your mouth needs to be clipped about a 16th of an inch off.” Mark then picked up the cutter showing Adam how it’s done, and clipped a bit off the end of the cigar. “Next, the other end of the cigar needs to be toasted. To toast the cigar you lightly apply the flame to the end of the cigar rolling it around evenly as you do. Keep your eye on the flame, and watch as it lightly singes the end of the cigar. Don’t take your eyes away from the flame as it may cause you to over toast the cigar.” With that, Mark struck a flame with the lighter, and began to lightly toast the cigar. “Next, you should blow a few puffs through the cigar so that any bitterness from the toasting is not brought back into the cigar itself.” With that, Mark puffed three times out through the cigar.

“Okay” Mark said, “Now it’s time to light the cigar to smoke it.” Mark’s voice had taken on a slower, more metered, and softer tone. “Remember, keep your eyes on the flame to make sure of what is happening. As the flame lights the cigar, watch how the cigar burns. Never put the cigar into the flame, always hold the flame in front of the cigar and inhale. As you inhale you gently pull the flame into the cigar, pay attention and notice how gently it moves. And as the cigar begins to burn, watch the end of the cigar and you’ll see how brightly red it gets as it burns, and watch how it glows each time that I inhale. Remember, don’t take your eyes off the end of the cigar. You’ll notice, as I get the cigar going clouds of smoke, don’t let the smoke distract you, just keep your eyes focused on the end of the cigar. You can then breathe in the smoke, and see how nice it smells.” Mark watched as Adam automatically nodded in agreement to each of Mark’s instructions.

Mark struck the lighter and Adam’s eyes immediately went to the flame. He then slowly moved the flame in front of Adam’s face. Adam’s eyes tracked the flame as it passed by his face, and then back in front of him. Mark slowly moved the cigar in the position is Adam watched the flame. Mark began to inhale on the cigar bringing the flame into it. Small puffs of smoke begin to waft in front of Adam, but Adam kept his eyes on the end of the cigar as he has been instructed. “It moves so lazily, doesn’t it?” Mark said softly. Each time Mark took a draw on the cigar, it began to burn a little bit more of it, eventually after several puffs, the end of the cigar was a bright cherry red. Adam was about ready to look away from the end of the cigar when Mark softly spoke again, “Close your eyes and breathe in the smoke so that you know it’s scent.” Again, Adam did as he was instructed.

“Remember how bright the end of the cigar was?", Mark asked. Adam nodded briefly. “Good, keep the image of that in your mind as you inhale slowly. Can you smell the aroma of the cigar?” Again Adam nodded. “Good, this cigar has a very mild aroma. Inhale again.” Again Adam did as instructed. “This type of cigar is good for relaxing. It’s not a heavy scent, it’s very easy to breathe in, don’t you think?” Adam took another inhale, and nodded. “Can you see why it’s good for relaxing? Just take another inhale and as you do, let yourself relax. It’s easy just to keep breathing in the scent of this cigar, isn’t it?” Adam nodded, a bit more slowly this time. “This type of cigar is easy to relax with. The scent is very pleasant, and relaxing.” Mark watched as Adam’s shoulders began to loosen and droop. Adam’s jaw and facial muscles had already gone slack.

“When you pledged to the fraternity last night, you were instructed to get two cigars from here weren’t you Adam?” Adam nodded. “You seemed a little apprehensive when you came in earlier, but you’re quite relaxed now aren’t you Adam?” Adam nodded. “As you can see, there’s nothing to worry about here. It’s just you and me, and I can tell that you like the scent of the cigar. You realize that now, don’t you Adam?” Adam nodded. “You see, there’s nothing to worry about here, everything is fine, you’re feeling very relaxed, and it’s easy just to breathe in the smoke from the cigar. And each time you inhale, you find it easier and easier to relax. In fact, the more you relax the easier it is to inhale the smoke deeply, and the deeper you inhale the smoke, the more you relax.” Mark watched as Adam relaxed deeper, and deeper. He watched as Adams head slowly lowered to place his chin on his chest. His arms hung loose and limp at his side.

“Adam, in a moment I’m going to ask you to open your eyes, when you do you will raise your head back up looking forward, and you will remain completely relaxed. You will continue to breathe in deeply and relax more, and more. Adam, open your eyes.” Adams eyes began to open as he raised his head. His eyes stared blankly forward. “Okay Adam, follow me.” Mark lead Adam into the back of the shop. Here, in the back office, Mark had and overstuffed leather recliner. He directed Adam to sit in the recliner. When Adam was seated, Mark pulled the lever to allow the chair to recline. He then instructed Adam to allow his eyes to close again. Mark then went to the front door of the store, turned the sign in the window around to show that he would be out for about an hour. He then locked the door and returned to the office.

Mark pulled the desk chair over beside the recliner, and then began to speak softly to Adam. “Adam, do you know who I am?” Adam nodded. “Adam, even though you are very relaxed, you can still speak and answer my questions verbally, do you understand?” “Yes”, Adam answered. “Good boy Adam. I am the man that built up the fraternity to be what it is today. I made it strong, and popular. Everyone in the fraternity respects that, and respects me as well. They all address me as Sir. As you are a pledge of that fraternity, you will address me as Sir as well. Do you understand?” “Yes Sir”, responded Adam. “Good boy. As I am the most respected person in the fraternity, when I praise you, you feel the pride of being recognized, and it makes you feel good from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Each time I say Good Boy to you, I am praising you, and you will find that you feel a deep sense of pleasure moving through your body from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Do you understand?” “Yes Sir”, responded Adam. “Good boy”, said Mark and he watched as Adam reacted from the top of his head to the tips of his toes. “It feels so good to please me, doesn’t it boy?” “Yes Sir”, responded Adam. “Each time you please me, you feel that incredible pleasure throughout your body. And it feels so good, that you want to feel more of it. And you know that to feel more of it, all you need to do, is please me. Each time you do something that I ask you to do for me, no matter how small and insignificant it is, you please me. And because you please me you feel that pleasure feeling throughout your whole body. And you will find that you want to do more for me, so that you are able to feel that rush of pleasure. Do you understand?” “Yes Sir” Adam responded.

“Good boy. Now, I’m going to tell you something very important, so important that you’re going to store it away in the deepest part of your mind so that you never forget it, but hidden away so you never remember that it’s there. Do you understand?” Mark asked. “Yes Sir” responded Adam. “Anytime one of the higher members of the fraternity is smoking a cigar, you will follow any instructions that they give you. You will find all instructions to be normal and reasonable and you will carry them out, without hesitation or question. The only one that can override anything they tell you, is me. You obey them, only at my discretion. Do you understand?” “Yes Sir” responded Adam. “And anytime, that I put my hand on your shoulder, you will follow my commands without hesitation and without question. Do you understand?” “Yes Sir” came the all-too-familiar response. “Good boy. In a moment I will ask you to sit up, then stand up, open your eyes and follow me out of the room back into the shop. Once in the shop, you will stand as you were when I first lit the lighter, and wait for further instructions. Adam, follow me.”

Adam’s legs immediately pushed in the foot rest of the chair, he stood and opened his eyes and followed Mark back into the front of the shop. As Adam took his place, Mark turned the sign on the front of the shop around and unlocked the door. He then took up his position in front of Adam. “Adam, when I count to five you’ll find yourself wide-awake with no memory of the trance that you are currently in. You will be wide-awake and feeling refreshed, with only the memory of how to properly light and smoke a cigar. It’s so easy to forget to remember what you remember to forget. One, beginning to breathe normally. Two, feeling your body standing straight and tall, as you normally stand. Three, sensing the room around you. Four, your eyes begin fluttering and opening. Five.”

“And that is how you light and smoke a cigar. Any questions?” Mark said. “No Sir” replied Adam.

“Very good then”, Mark said has he put his hand on Adam shoulder. “We’ll get you set up with these two cigars, and you can see how much you like them when you smoke them. I’m sure you’ll like them and be back for more.” “Thank you, Sir” came Adam’s reply. “Hand me that pen on the desk, please.” Mark told Adam. And, as Adam handed his Sir the pen, he let out a soft sigh of pleasure.
