Chapter 1: The Osaka Dragons

The Star

“Ladies and gentlemen, let’s see what our judges have to say about Akiyama-San’s performance.” The announcer’s voice boomed out of the speakers.

Aiko took a moment to catch her breath as she waited for the results, stretching a little and reaching for her toes so that she didn’t have to look at the three men and women who would be deciding her fate.

She was easily the best gymnast on her team, and she knew a lot was riding on what her score would be. She always went last, so she was always aware of how much pressure was on her to perform. The team had 58 points, their opponents had 60. They’d done well enough this time, she only needed four points to take the lead, but the Kyoto Blossoms still had their ace. Even with a perfect score of 12, Kyoto would still win if Kana scored even just 10.

“And our first judge awards a perfect score! Four points for Akiyama.”

There was a good deal of applause at the pronouncement. Aiko let out a sigh and stood back up, hugging herself before stretching from side to side, throwing her arms across her body and looking in the opposite direction. It was another avoidance tactic, but no one could blame a gymnast for keeping up with her stretching.

Her body was perfectly petite, causing the twenty-year-old to look more like a young teenager rather than the accomplished young adult that she was, but the small size and slim build were both perfect for what she had chosen to devote her life to.

When she was younger, Aiko had often felt that gymnastics were her parents’ dream for her. The long hours of training consumed nearly all her time outside of school. Her exercise and her diet kept her trim as well, and while her peers were rarely busty, Aiko’s slim curves often felt downright boyish, causing her to feel a bit like an outcast.

Eventually Aiko had developed some curves, though that only forced her to work harder to compensate for the unfamiliar weight on her chest. Aiko’s waist was a particular point of pride though, and it was slim enough to give some emphasis to her hips which were otherwise narrow. Even though the curves made things more difficult, Aiko couldn’t help but notice that judges seemed to approve of her look and had a hunch that it had slipped its way subtly into how they scored her, particularly with the men.

“Our second judge… another perfect score! Four points!”

A cheer went up from the friends and family of her team in the crowd and Aiko allowed herself a small feeling of pride. Tanaka Asa was known around the circuit as one of the toughest judges out there. A former gymnast herself, the small, dark-haired woman was stunningly beautiful, but her presence was always intimidating.

Just one more. Aiko thought, finally giving her attention over to the judges.

She’d been studying the judges through most of the performance, save when it was her turn. She noted Asa, wearing her neat business skirt suit with kohl-lined brown eyes decorated in purple mascara. To Asa’s right was the other judge Saito Hiroshi. Hiroshi was a coach for the Japanese Olympic team. He had been her other perfect score. Tall, thin, he wore round spectacles that gave him the severe appearance of a professor, though she knew from experience that he was kind at his core.

The third judge, the one that had yet to score her, was someone relatively unknown to her. The blonde-haired man was an American with similar experience, being Hiroshi’s counterpart on the Olympic squad for the United States.

Ben Woodward, that was his name, it had slipped Aiko’s thoughts for a moment. Ben was much broader than Hiroshi, with a muscular build that suggested he might have once been a gymnast as well. Then he raised his placard and Aiko’s heart stopped.

“Unbelievable! Our third judge has denied Akiyama-San’s perfect score with a rating of three points!”

Three. And four. And four.

Eleven points.

“Alright, folks, that leaves the Osaka Dragons with a total of sixty-nine points. If Suzuki Kumi can get just ten points, the Kyoto Blossoms will win!”

The News

As it happened, Kumi had only managed eight points. The rest of Aiko’s team was celebrating their victory in the locker room. They’d tried to draw her in to their revels, but her thoughts were still too heavy with the disappointment of only nearly getting a perfect score.

It couldn’t have been her basic forms, the Split and Scissors leaps were executed flawlessly, as well as her forward Somersault.

It had to have been her Tsukahara, but Aiko felt that her execution there was perfect also. The Tsukahara was one of her signature moves: it was named after Mitsuo Tsukahara who had been the first to pull it off and combined a spring board with a vault, taking a half turn and then finishing with a backflip to a standing position.

Aiko had been crisp, clean, with a solid landing without even the faintest hit of wobbling, even as her feet slammed against the floor enough to send a jolt up her spine.

“You’re too serious.” Misa said as she stepped next to Aiko and wrapped one arm around her. “Your eleven points were the highest of the night, no one got a perfect score.”

“I know,” Aiko sighed, “but Woodward-San. He was giving easy scores, threes that should have been twos and fours that should have been threes.”

Misa gave her a sympathetic look and squeezed her in the one-armed hug lightly. She didn’t say anything else though and, after a moment, got up to return to the rest of their teammates. Aiko looked down at the golden dragon on her leotard, she should have felt like a dragon after her performance, but she was still struggling to find that confidence.

Just as she was about to strip out of her uniform and get dressed in her street clothes, two men walked in. The first was the Dragons’ coach, Fujita Jiro. Beside him was Ben Woodward.

Aiko sucked in her breath and bit down on her lip before she did something to betray her feelings. She needed to wear a mask of stone.

Misa, Tamika, Cho, Ayaka, and Misaki took a moment longer to notice their visitors, but each of them stopped talking and formed up in a line as soon as they did. Sore and weary, Aiko reluctantly joined them.

“Good performance, girls.” Their Sensei said with a look that could have frozen flame. After a moment, a small smile slipped across his features, however. “It was truly very good work, but we need to be much better if we’re going to win Nationals.

“To this end, Woodward-San here has offered to train all of you at his gym back in the States.”

The blonde-haired man had been smiling the entire time, forgoing the Japanese custom of stoicism. His blue eyes seemed to be able to pierce souls and read a person. When his gaze swept over to Aiko, she averted her eyes, looking down. It was a moment of weakness, but when she glanced at the rest of the team, she could see they had responded much the same.

“Please, girls.” Woodward said gently, “let’s see your lovely faces.”

It took a moment for Aiko to process what he said, the sudden addition of English to the conversation forced her to think for a moment. She made herself look up, as did the others. Sensei was disappointed by something, was it her, or the rest of her team? Aiko took in a deep breath, resolving to do better.

“You will be training under me for two months.” He spread his arms as though offering an enormous hug to them all, but it was only a gesticulation. “While you’re with me, you will also be learning English. Your first word, for the duration of your stay, you shall refer to me as Master.”

Then it was their Sensei who averted his gaze and something inside of Aiko trembled.

Welcome to the USA

Aiko’s team had only a week to get ready before their flight left and they were suddenly thrust into the United States. However, their Sensei and Master Woodward had seen to everything in their arrangements. They had some downtime in San Francisco where they got to just be tourists, riding in the Trolley Cars, eating (but not too much!) at swanky establishments, and overall, just enjoying themselves and relaxing.

Two days after they arrived, Master Woodward finally joined them. He thanked their Sensei and then they dropped him off at the airport to head home. Master Woodward’s home, it turned out, was further north in the suburbs of Napa.

“Konnichiwa, girls.” Master Woodward said to them after they had unloaded their belongings from the bus.

Master Woodward lived on the edge of the woods in a large, two-story home. He had a large yard, his neighbors were at least two or three houses down, if they used Master Woodward’s home as a unit of measurement. It was a little bit of a shock for the girls, who had grown up in the city, packed away neatly into tidy apartments.

The house seemed even bigger on the inside, being much deeper than it appeared from the front. There was room for a massive kitchen with an adjoining dining room as well as two separate living room areas and an indoor gym which opened to a patio and a backyard training area as well.

They didn’t get a chance to look inside the Master Bedroom, which was only natural, though Aiko found her curiosity piqued. There were three bathrooms and three bedrooms, one of which had one of the bathrooms attached to it directly.

This bedroom, Master Woodward explained haltingly in Japanese, was for the star of the team, Aiko. Misa and Cho had their own bedroom, and the remaining bedroom would house Tamika, Ayaka, and Misaki. The room preference was a bit different than they were used to, Aiko didn’t generally get preferential treatment despite her star status, but if the other girls were bothered by it, they didn’t say anything.

Misa and Cho were both seniors on the team at eighteen. Tamika was sixteen, Ayaka was fifteen, and Misaki was fourteen, so the rooming assignments based on seniority also made sense. Aiko would have liked to have roomed with Misa. The six-member team could have been assigned two to a room, but she wasn’t going to start things off on the wrong foot by complaining. Perhaps she could convince Master Woodward of the idea later.

There was a smaller common room on the second floor as well. Master Woodward found Aiko and asked her to gather up her teammates as his Japanese was rudimentary and she had the best English on the team.

The other girls were still unpacking, picking beds, dressers, and vanities but they dropped everything at once when Aiko called, and like a small military troop, marched their way down the hall to see Master Woodward.

The upstairs common room was cozy in comparison to the rest of the house, and it seemed furnished to suit the needs of a group of teenage girls, complete with beanbag chairs, a couple of computers, and a big TV screen.

“When you’re not training, you should be here.” Master Woodward explained, allowing Aiko to translate.

She didn’t understand everything herself, and had to ask him some questions before she could convey the words to her teammates.

“Why here?” Cho asked, her English halted and rough.

“Here is where you will learn English. You will also learn a bit about American girls.”
