CHAPTER 13

ANGEL AND KENDRA TAKE TESTS: PASS OR FAIL.

Fifteen year old Angel was climbing a ladder. It seemed so high and was positioned so straight up it made her think of the Led Zeppelin classic Stairway to Heaven as she looked up at the great cloudless blue sky above. But there was no heaven waiting above, only her stepfather, the Devil himself, on the roof.

As her head poked up over the roof he stood before her ready. It was a scorcher of a day and putting shingles on a third story roof was damn hard work.

He smiled when he saw her, his shirtless body covered in brutally earned sweat and dirt. He had a bit of a paunch but it didn’t hide the hard muscle of his chest and arms nor the tattoos he wore. He had gotten both during a stint in prison years ago for assault. He had been a good boy since, at least good enough not to get caught in small crimes he still indulged in and hide so expertly from those he knew.

Angel gripped the ladder with one hand and held out a cold, large glass of beer with the other. Her step father had told her never to look down when she brought him his drink or lunch but Angel found looking down, nor up, nor sideways didn’t bother her at all. She realized none of it fazed or frightened her. She realized she was actually very fearless and that thought intrigued her even as she kept it a secret that she harbored close.

Her stepfather grabbed the beer with his large hand and grinned pleasantly. “Thanks Angel. That hits the ole spot sure enough. Damn it to hell it’s so hot up here.” He tilted his head back and put the glass up taking huge gulps like he was trying to drink the world. A good bit of the beer ran down his chin and neck. She watched his adams apple bob with each loud swallow.

In just a few seconds the huge glass was empty. He handed it back to her. “You sure enough are my little Angel always takin’ good care of me,” he said. “Couldn’t do this crap without you right there helping.”

“You’re welcome,” replied Angel.

He gazed at her and nodded. Then he let out a huge belch. “Ahhh yeah, that’s a man’s belch right there.”

She nodded.

“See how we all take care of each other round here? I patch the roof so’s the rain don’t get on in and you bring me my beer and food. That’s how a family apost to work, right?”

Angel nodded.

“You know, thinkin’ maybe tonight we spent us some family time together. Just Angel and her daddy. Make us both happy. Sound bout right to you?”

Angel was looking his way but really was seeing above him at a large graceful bird flying free, a master of the air. Could be an eagle or a hawk. Either way it was free. Free.

“Whatever you say.”

“K. Now why don’t you take yourself down there and start me up some supper. When you’re done come hold the ladder when I come down. I’m gonna have me a real big appetite tonight. A real big appetite, you hear?”

She heard. She knew exactly what that big appetite was about and what would slake it.

Angel was laying in bed in her favorite PJs, the ones with the pink ponies all over, listening to music she hoped would drown out the footsteps when they finally came up the hall to her room. It wouldn’t stop what would happen but every second mattered in this kind of situation. Angel cherished every one of those seconds.

But hearing the footsteps or not the inevitable walking happened and eventually the door opened as it did now.

Her step father stood there, the familiar cords of rope in his hands to tie her arms and legs to the bed posts and that same determined look on his face as when he worked one of the roof shingles with his hammer. He was naked except for his underwear.

She looked at him feeling no more fear than she did way up high on the ladder, even with what she knew was coming; just a cold appraisal and understanding of the situation. He thought she was scared up there, on that ladder, even more scared down here too. Fear of things was a lever of control and he knew that well. But she was never scared anymore, that emotion had long passed for Angel, now she was just thinking.

The next day Angel was standing at the bottom of the ladder holding it against the wall with all her strength and weight as her step father started down from that roof so very high up. “Hold that bad boy tight, Angel. I weigh a lot more’n you do.”

He took his first step down on the high ladder towards her and another night together as a ‘family’ as Angel looked up at him.

Angel shot up in bed so fast and hard that she woke up Sparky who was lying cuddled up next to her. Her body was sweaty.

“God damn it. Can’t you leave me alone even now?” she asked thinking back on the dream she had just experienced. “Especially today.”

Her step father would frequent her dreams now and then but lately he had visited her more often, since things had gone south with Brianna. “Well you’re not ruining it asshole. This is my day!”

She gave Sparky a hug and a kiss and let him lick her face then she jumped out of bed and went to make breakfast. She wanted a full stomach and full mental capacity for her big day.

Angel was riding in an uber when she called Robert. She was calling off work today and she really didn’t care if he gave permission or not. Robert answered on the third ring.

“Angel?”

“Yeah, hey Robert. Look, Sparky isn’t feeling well. Threw up all night and I’m really worried. I’m taking him to the vet so I guess I won’t be in if that’s OK with you.”

“No problems. I’ll have one of the other girls stay. They always want the overtime.”

Yeah, except you don’t pay, you short them, thought Angel.

“I hope he’s alright. If there is anything you need you know I’m here for you. I think of all the girls as family. I want you to be happy.”

“Hey I appreciate that, thanks.”

“Keep me informed.”

“I will. Laters.”

“So long.”

Angel sat in a classroom with around thirty other people, mostly young like her but several middle aged and even older. They all looked nervous. Angel felt as calm as a June country pond on a windless day.

The instructor, a man in his forties spoke up. “Ok, in a minute the test will begin. Just try your best. You will do fine. Remember in a worst case scenario you can take this test again and again. Our goal is to have all of you pass eventually.”

There was some murmuring and chuckles. “One time for me,” said Angel fiercely. The young boy next to her looked at her with admiration and a bit of lust.

The instructor looked at his watch. “Ready, begin.”

Kendra sat in Robert’s office erect and waiting command. She was more gorgeous than ever in a purple passion camisole and matching shorts the really showed off her hard bubble butt. She had the glasses on but he had not given her a shot. The drug was locked in his office safe. He regretted giving her so much the last few weeks in contravention of Mr. Grey’s admonition but he had to completely break her down fast to accomplish what he had in mind. He was under the gun, figuratively and literally.

He had to ascertain the damage in Kendra and see what could be done. He was much calmer now than he had been when he heard about Lisa’s brutal beating and knew he could find a way to suss out what was going on in Kendra’s screwed up head.

He had thought long and hard about Kendra’s behavior and mute silence at some of his questions before. There was something at work in her that was contravening his control and he wanted to see just how far it had gone. Was it a true concern or just an inconvenience he would work around?

He couldn’t help but harken back at a movie he watched as child that scared the living shit out of him. That movie had been Frankenstein starring Michael Sarrazin as the monster. In the beginning everything had gone well with Doctor Frankenstein’s experiment of making a new person out of dead body parts but as time went by schisms developed and the monster had turned on him, revealing it’s true, black self.

Robert couldn’t help but note the two similarities of what he and Frankenstein had done because after all, wasn’t Kendra’s new life built on the now dead Brianna and now his creation was acting up just like Frankenstein’s monster.

In the end of the movie both monster and the doctor were on a one way trip to Antarctica on a boat that the creature made sure would never return. It was clear what the doctors fate would be but the monster was indestructible.

But Robert knew Kendra wasn’t.

And as much as that movie had frightened the child, now the man realized there was something to learn from it.

He wasn’t going on any one way ride with his creation.

“Kendra, how do you feel?”

“I feel great. I only want to follow your orders.”

He walked over examining her face closely. “Good, good. That makes me happy. I need to ask you some questions. I want you to answer honestly for me.”

“I will always do as you command. I am nothing without you. Doing what you say is all I am for.”

“Do you remember hurting Lisa?”

Kendra’s blank face suddenly split into a beatific smile. “Yes. I do remember.” There was joy in her voice now instead of the blank nothing of before.

“Why did you hurt her like that?”

“I love to hurt people. I get off on it. It’s the best feeling in the world.”

Robert shook his head. Hearing her say that so calmly and matter of fact was the creepiest thing he had ever seen. He wondered if serial killers felt the same way. He supposed they did.

“If I give you an order will you obey it?”

“I love you. I need you. My life for yours. I exist only to listen to and carry out your thoughts.”

“This is an order. My order. I never want you to hurt anyone again unless I tell you to. Do you understand and obey?”

Kendra sat there silent, watching him, mute. With those dark glasses on she looked like some inscrutable alien being observing him. Unbidden, Frankenstein crept into his head again. So did thoughts of Mr. Grey and leakage and all those shots of the drug he had made her take.

He paced around to get out of her view. He moved behind her and decided on another tack. He put his hands on her glorious, strong shoulders and began messaging them. “Tell me you will never hurt anyone again unless I order it.”

“I will never hurt anyone again unless you order it.”

“I never want you to hurt anyone again unless I tell you to. Do you understand?”

Once again Kendra sat silent. God damn it, he thought.

“This is an order. My order. You will never hurt or harm me. Do you understand and obey?”

Silence.

“Tell me you would never hurt or harm me.”

“I would never hurt or harm you, Robert.”

“I see,” he said as he walked back to his desk and sat down.

He did see, very clearly. There was a world of difference between Kendra repeating what he told her to say and asking her if she would do something and getting no answer. In one she was parroting back what he said like a recorder on play and in the other scenario, for some reason, she could not or would not give an answer as to what she would do when asked a direct question. A difference so big it could mean life or death for others and more importantly for Robert.

“Kendra, I brought you here to ask you some specific questions I needed answers to. A test if you will. Those answers are very important to me and to be honest, even more so for you. If I didn’t know better I would say you are playing games with me but I understand in your mental state that just isn’t possible. So that brings me back to why you won’t answer those questions. What prevents it? Why can’t you answer those two questions, Kendra?”

“I’m trying my best, Robert. I feel strange. Like there are….holes in my brain…like pieces of me are…….missing.”

He could see she was struggling with something vital. It was writ on her face.

“Go on, go on, tell me everything,” he implored with command in his tone.

Her forehead scrunched up with concentration wrinkles and her eyes closed. He could clearly see her breathing become more labored as her chest rose and fell. Her eyes remained closed when she finally spoke.

“There is….a voice….inside me…its part of me…telling me things.”

“My voice?”

She smiled. “Yes, always your voice Robert. Always you guiding me with your thoughts and love.”

He relaxed. This was very good. He was still in there.

“But….the….other…” she trailed off.

“What other, Kendra?”

“Kendra. Her voice. The real Kendra. She wants out. She tells me things.”

That was not good at all.

“What does she tell you?”

Kendra turned and looked Robert right in the eye. “She tells me how nice it is to hurt people.”

“Which people?”

Her smile was brilliant. “Anyone I want to. Everyone.”

Ice ran up his spine like a caravan of spiders on so many fast legs.

I want you to hurt people too, but the ones I need to hurt.

“Is there anything else you can tell me?”

She closed her eyes again. Finally, “No. I can’t.”

Can’t, won’t? The semantics of life and death. No room for error here Robert.

Robert gave all of this long careful consideration as Kendra just gazed at him smiling softly. Eventually he came to the conclusion that there was only way for him know for sure, without a scintilla of doubt; the only way to remain safe.

He pulled away from her, letting his hands slide over and linger on her warm, smooth shoulders and went back to his desk and sat down.

“I see. Then there’s only one other way you can pass this test now Kendra.”

“Anything for you, Robert. Your thoughts are my thoughts. My life for yours.”

“Come here, please.”

Kendra immediately rose and walked over to him with her usual smooth, confident athletic grace. She stood there, adoring him.

He opened his desk drawer and pulled out a bottle of bourbon and two thick glasses. Then he reached in again and pulled out his colt .45 and placed it between the glasses. Kendra just watched, smiling, happy.

He poured half a glass of the brown liquid in each.

“This is Old Rip Van Winkle. It’s ten years old and costs twelve hundred a bottle. It is only for very special occasions.”

Kendra nodded, gazing at him with those loving green eyes, as though what he was saying was the secret to life.

He slid a glass to her.

“Let’s drink up.”

She smiled again, shyly, a bit sadly.

“I…I…know I don’t deserve this. I know I made you unhappy.”

Robert shook his head.

“No. Any fault is mine Kendra, you have done all that I could have asked.”

He held out his hand across the desk, open. She took it and they held on.

“Please, drink up. It would make me happy. To you, Kendra.”

He raised his glass and she took hers. The glasses clinked as they touched in a toast.

The both downed the drink.

She smiled and then giggled. “Oh my god is that good! So smooth.”

He smiled back, wistfully. “One of life’s great pleasures.”

Kendra looked at him and her eyes were moist with tears. “Robert, I….I’m…so…happy…I don’t..deserve…y..you.”

No, you didn’t deserve me. You didn’t deserve any of this.

“Thank you, Kendra. I will never forget it.”

He put his glass down, picked up the pistol and racked the slide. The sound of it reverberated around the office. It sounded so metallic, uncaring.

He placed it back on the desk, looked at the gun and then at her. He slid it across the oak desk to Kendra. It made a grating sound as he did it. Metal on wood.

“Kendra, I want you to take the gun then return to your chair.”

She smiled again, “Yes, Robert.” She picked it up and returned to her chair walking so sexily on those mile long legs, that hard ass swaying hypnotically.

“I’m sorry about this Kendra but I have to know and you leave me no other option.”

Kendra nodded enthusiastically. “I want only what you want. Always.”

“I appreciate that. I want you to put that gun to your head and kill yourself on my command. As you said, your life for mine.”

Kendra gasped then moaned but not in fear or refusal but from total pleasure. She had so often fantasized about giving her life for Robert; it was the ultimate act of obedience.

She brought the gun up with her strong right arm without a moment’s hesitation. Her pussy was already leaking torrents and she could feel its warmth already riding up her spine into her brain and body. She knew she just had a few moments at the most to pull the trigger before the greatest orgasm of her life might make it physically impossible.

She aimed the gun at her temple and broke out in a lascivious smile, licking her excitement swollen lips. As she tightened her finger on the trigger her pussy melted in total commitment and ecstasy as she felt the orgasm begin to erupt and take her to another plane as she always knew this order would.

Robert poured some more bourbon in his glass, held it up and examined the brown liquid as it moved within.

He turned to her, taking all of her in with his eyes. Even after all this time together, all the days and nights he held sway over that body her physical magnificence still took his breath away. Flawless. Just unreal. He knew he would never see another like her.

“Life is so beautiful. It’s so beautiful...” he said almost to himself.

“I love you so much, Robert.” Her green eyes were sparkling.

Robert nodded and his eyes narrowed. He took a slow sip of the bourbon.

“Then show me. Do it now Kendra,” he said placidly.

As Kendra tightened on the trigger, it came just as she imagined; an orgasm so strong it seemed fused into her very cells then violently rocked her into some twilight out of body experience where she was a vapor of distilled sexual pleasure just floating off.

With her last bit of consciousness, the barrel placed squarely and firmly against her temple, panting and moaning for obeying Robert’s ultimate command she eagerly pulled the trigger.

BANG! The door to Angel’s apartment crashed against the wall as she flung it open with unrestrained joy. She leapt into the apartment on cloud nine as Sparky sprang up to greet her.

She rushed to him and they collided, sprawling on the floor wiggling, wrestling, and hugging.

“Woo! Woo! I did it Sparky! I aced it big time! Cuz I knew every answer! I don’t even have to wait for the results! With the GED I’m gonna be a college girl and then a vet! I’ll be able to take care of you someday all by myself like if you get a cold or step on a nail or eat something bad. Isn’t that just the best!?”

Sparky’s little stump tail wagged like a fan as he pounced on her with excitement and licked her face. Angel couldn’t stop giggling. For the first time in a long time she felt good from something she had done.

She reached into a small bag she had with her and pulled out a ball painted with playing squirrels.

“Look Sparky! Its’ a squeaky ball! With little squirrels! I bought it so we can celebrate!” She squeezed it and it squeaked. “See? Squeaky, squeaky! Isn’t it cool? It’s for you!”

Sparky went bonkers prancing around and shaking his head. She squeezed it again then threw it. Sparky bounded after it and brought it back.

Angel sat at her PC, looking over the costs of college, Sparky’s head resting on her lap, his big, sad brown eyes glued to her face the ball in his mouth.

“See there? I could go to community college, that’s a lot cheaper. I could go to a state school but it’s a lot more expensive. But it would get me where I want to go faster.”

Sparky whined then squeaked the ball.

She smiled at him. “Yeah, I’m right with you Sparky, I’m thinking state school too. Brianna would want that. She always wanted to do things right. I don’t have the money but…I might find a way to get it. Here’s a secret just between us, if you keep your eyes open and think you can figure out a way on most anything.”

Sparky started licking her hand. She turned off the PC and hugged him their heads together.

“Brianna would be so proud of me. I never would have done this if it wasn’t for her. It’s all because of her. I wish she was here so I could tell her. I wonder what she’s doing tonight? Do you think she would care now, I mean the way she is? I hope she would even with all the…things going on with her. It would mean everything to me. But at least I know you care. We’re in this together.”

Sparky ran in a small circle, pure doggy excitement then launched himself right back into her.

“You know Brianna bought you for me. That’s because she loves me and she loves you. It’s like you’re a part of her still with me. Don’t you think she’s terrific? You know the problems she has aren’t her fault, right?” The dog gave an excited bark.

“Yes! You do know! Oh you’re my smart boy!”

Sparky nuzzled her.

She gave Sparky a kiss. “I love you so much.”

Angel closed her eyes, hugging the dog tight. “I wonder what Brianna is doing? I hope she’s alright. I’m so worried about her.”

Maxin sat in his chair for quite some time trying to digest what he had just seen; to fully comprehend the indescribable, incomprehensible act Kendra had inflicted on herself at his command right in front of his face.

He knew that the one thing humans and most living entities shared was an atavistic, screaming desire for life, to survive as long as possible. It was hard wired in their DNA, their brain synapses, their very cells, down to the deepest marrow of their bones.

Yet that had somehow been totally eradicated from that beautiful, strong girl.

He couldn’t erase the image in his mind of Kendra, smiling, smiling, so happy and joyful as she put the gun to her head with no hesitation at all. That last look on her face the moment before she pulled the trigger; she looked like a woman meeting the lover of her wildest fantasies, so ready to receive a forever lusted for stolen kiss.

She looked like she was cumming.

And now only after the deed was done did Robert fully comprehend the true, terrifying all encompassing power that Grey had bestowed on him.

It was beyond imagining. It was like being a god.

And the thought occurred to him, how much he would give to have more devices, to use on the other girls…and Angel…especially sweet young Angel.

To make her love him as she had Brianna, to make her forget she ever cared for Brianna like it had been some hazy dream upon awaking to a new, different life. To have her adoring gaze upon him at all times when he was near, to bend her to his will alone. Grey had told him he would get no more devices but damn it if he could only somehow do it.

Robert slowly got off his chair and walked to Kendra. The walk seemed to take forever.

He kneeled down looking closely at her limp body sprawled out on the floor. What a horrific way to discover what he needed to know.

Looking at her, Robert felt a stab of remorse. What he had done was the coldest, most brutal act of his entire life.

He wondered briefly how it had all come to this.

He thought of Frankenstein again.

But was it he who was the real monster after all?

He couldn’t abide that thought. Wasn’t he fighting for his club, for his life, against evil men who had insinuated themselves into his world and wouldn’t let go? Hadn’t that been the cause of all that had now happened?

But no matter how hard he rationalized the thought just wouldn’t go away.

He shook his head, sadly. He could feel the bile rise in his stomach.

If he was forced to be a monster to save all he had earned with his sweat and blood, then a monster he would have to be.

“Kendra, I’m sorry this had to happen. Believe me, I really am. You left me no choice. It was the only test I could think of. I had to know if you were still loyal to me; if I was safe from you.”

His eyes took in the remnants of a blissful smile that somehow, incredibly still remained etched on her face despite the awful thing she had done to herself, then down to the massive wet spot her pussy had discharged between her legs when she had the gun to her head and finally pulled that trigger in her last act of pure obedience, love and loyalty.

“But it looks like you enjoyed it. You were still mine after all. Now I know.”
