Chapter I: “Kevin’s Awakening”

Kevin Shadows had no idea of his very strange lineage. How could he? He had no memory of his real parents. His mother had left him on the steps of an orphanage when he was only a few days old, so he could have no idea that his mother had been half Elf, nor that she had been fleeing because her half-Vampire lover, his father, had been converted to a full Vampire and was now after her blood at the command of his Master, a powerful Alpha Vampire. Kevin was in a very unenviable position. Although he had gorgeous blue eyes, and he tanned just like all the other kids, his silver hair would not accept any kind of dye or pigmentation. It was the fact that both of his parents had been half human that allowed him to be in the sun at all. He didn’t have the Elven allergy to Cold Iron, which was a major plus, since so many mortal foods have iron in them. He didn’t seem to mind looking at crosses and Stars of David, or other religious artifacts, and holy water had no ill effect on him. That was what made him seem semi-normal. He rarely needed medical attention because he healed any wound almost instantly, except those inflicted by wooden things, like baseball bats or splinters. That was the only one of his powers which manifested itself at an early age, and often it was the only thing that saved his life. Now, he was sixteen, and his powers were beginning to emerge in force.

The first time he noticed something weird was when he woke up one frigid Monday morning to find that everything was different. He could hear and identify every heartbeat in the house—no! On the block! He could hear Mom’s steady one, Dad’s thumpity-thumpity-thumpity beat, Kyle’s strong one, and Suzie’s aroused pitter-patter, which was probably being caused by a wet dream, within the house. Mrs. Feldman’s heart sounded like a diesel engine’s idle being immitated by tom-toms. Mr. Flanders across the street was puttering along at a mile a minute, possibly on the verge of heart failure. Kevin shook his head and tried to shut out the noise. The smell of bacon came to his nostrils, but it hadn’t been cooked yet. It smelled like someone had just stuck some raw bacon up to his nose. Kevin went downstairs and found that his adopted mother was in the process of opening a new package of bacon.

“Hi, honey! You’re up early!” Mom said. “You usually don’t get up until the bacon’s cooked.” She ran her fingers through his silver hair. “You don’t feel hot.” she said. “Go ahead and get dressed.” Kevin did as he was told. He came down in his blue jeans and his sweater, the black one with the red, gold, blue, green and orange parallelograms his adopted mother had always insisted on calling “diamonds.” He put his shoes on at the foot of the stairs, and received his plate. Suzie, age seventeen, and Kyle, who was Kevin’s age, raced down the steps to be the first ones at breakfast, and were understandibly dismayed to find Kevin was already up, dressed and eating.

“You had a secret alarm clock, didn’t you?” Suzie asked. One of the rules of this daily competition, which had been a morning ritual with the trio for as long as they could remember, was that no alarm clocks could be used.

“Nope.” Kevin replied. “There was some noise outside.”

“You’re a sound sleeper.” Suzie said. “Anything that would wake you up would wake us up too.” They were still argueing when their mother told them it was time to go to school. Suzie, being the eldest, got to drive. There was nothing good on morning radio, so Suzie popped a tape into the player. She would have used a Hanson tape to annoy the boys, particularly Kevin, if they had not already signed a contract in blood that Suzie would never buy, record or borrow any material relating to Hanson, as long as the boys agreed to give her exclusive rights to the second phone line after the sun went down.

Kevin got his second hint when he got to school and found Marty Winkler, also known as The Eternal Senior, waiting for him.

“You passed me in the hall Friday, Ke-vin.” Marty said. “NO ONE passes ME in the hall, EVER!”

“You stopped to tie your shoe, and I was going to be tardy.” Kevin replied, trying to go around the seven-foot monster before him. Kevin was seven feet tall as well, but it was only because of his lankiness. “If I decide to be tardy, then everyone unlucky enough to be behind me is tardy, PUNK! GOT THAT?!” He grabbed Kevin by the front of his sweater, then drew back a fist and brought it forward as hard as he could. Kevin caught it in his hand and began to squeeze. Bone bit into his fingers, but Kevin didn’t care. Marty screamed for mercy, and that was when Kevin snapped out of it and released him. Marty ran away, whimpering, while Kevin stared at his hand in shock. How had those long, thin fingers that seemed designed for playing musical instruments and looked like they would break if ever used for violence, managed to crush Marty’s hand? Those who had witnessed the scene began chanting “Kevin! Kevin” over and over. He tried to escape to the cafeteria, but soon found he had a cheering entourage. Desperate to escape the throng surrounding him, he jumped as high as he could, and found himself on the roof of the Math Wing.

“That has GOT to be a record!” someone muttered.

Kevin found himself a corner next to the maintainence access and sat down. What was going on? How was all this happening? Kevin had more questions than answers. The people below were running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

“Need some answers, honey?” someone asked. Kevin whirled to find a young woman with silver hair and blue eyes. Her skin was much fairer than Kevin’s, but otherwise she looked very much like him.

“Who are you?” he demanded.

“I’m your mother.” she said. “Your real mother.”

“That’s plausible, I guess.” Kevin replied. “Mom did say I was adopted. But how do I know you’re really my birth mother?”

“Because I know why you can do all these things.” she said. “You’re my son, and I am half Elf. Elves have always been deceptively strong. Your father was half Vampire, and their strength is absolutely astounding. Furthermore, their senses are several times more acute than those of a human. As the child of two human/Pretender hybrids, many of our weaknesses have been bred out because of humans’ resistance to the things which would be lethal, even to a half-Elf or half-Vampire.”

“Let me get this straight...an Elf and a human were able to produce fertile offspring?”

“Is that any more remarkable than a human and a Vampire producing fertile offspring?” the woman asked.

“I thought Vampires were humans that were bitten by other Vampires.” Kevin replied.

“You can also be born a Vampire.” the woman said. “It’s not like they’re sterile or anything.”

“So why’d you dump me?” Kevin asked.

“I wish I hadn’t had to, but your father was made full Vampire, and the bloodthirst became too powerful for him to control.” she replied. “He came after me. He wanted me to be with him for eternity. Luckily you’re only one-quarter Vampire. I’ll bet you even eat fruits and vegetables on occasion.”

“I practically live on chili taters.” Kevin replied. “It’s a wonder I haven’t turned into Fat Albert or something like that.”

“Have you ever heard of a fat Elf?”

“No.”

“It’s because Elven metabolism gets rid of excess fat. Granted, it means sometimes they starve to death when they can’t find food in the forest, but it keeps their arteries clear.” The person who claimed to be his mother told Kevin many more things about Vampires and Elves before the maintainence ladder appeared at the ledge. He glanced back to her, but she was gone.

At break, Kevin went out to the parking lot to test his strength. He managed to lift a half-ton Chevy over his head. “Whoa! Talk about a pickup truck!” he exclaimed. Suddenly wary of anyone who might be watching, he set the truck down. While he was there, he noticed that his sister had double-parked, and one of the three campus security guards who were affiliated with the local police was walking purposefully toward it. A hop, skip and a jump later, he was at the back of the hot car. He pushed down on it a few times, until it started jumping, then he pretended that moving it was giving him a hernia as he put it within the lines. He pretended to wipe sweat off his forehead, pop his back, and rub at a sore spot, then he flexed for the female cop. She shook her head and started scribbling in her ticket book.

“You realize obstructing justice is a felony?” she asked.

“You’re not going to report this.” Kevin said, fixing her gaze with his. “Are you?”

“Not...re...report...” she muttered.

“You look tense. Why don’t you relax?” Kevin said. Her shoulders and arms relaxed, as did her fingers, from which the ticket book dropped, forgotten, to the ground, and her eyes became completely glazed as she stared into Kevin’s eyes. She looked real nice in her uniform, with nice, firm tits, soft, shapely hips, and a flat, muscular tummy. Her mouth hung open slightly. “Close your mouth.” Kevin said. She obeyed. Kevin took off her hat and removed the pin that kept her rich, smooth black hair up in a tight bun. Her olive-colored skin and dark eyes shone in the sunlight. She didn’t respond as he touched her breast.

“I want you to count to a hundred, and slowly, slowly, you will forget the numbers just as you will forget everything else, and soon the numbers will become my magic phrase ‘You command, I obey.’” Kevin said. Slowly, the guard began counting, and by thirty-nine, had started to forget the numbers, and had started over again. On the third try, number five and beyond became the phrase “You command, I obey.” She muttered it over and over, slowly ingraining it into her subconscious, with Kevin never once breaking eye contact. Kevin stopped her mantra and started pumping her for information about herself; name, relationship status, address, phone number, what she was wearing under her uniform, the contents of her pockets. She did not resist as he asked her each question. She answered each question as though reading the answers off a card taped to his retinas. Kevin undid the top three buttons on her uniform shirt and whispered some post-hypnotic commands to her so he could control her over the phone. He kissed her on her lips and released his stranglehold on her mind. She blinked, and as she saw who was kissing her, she warmly, passionately returned the kiss.

They made out, petting heavily, until the bell rang for students to go back inside. He broke the kiss and whispered one of her trigger phrases, so she orgasmed right where she stood.

“I’ll call you tonight, Renee.” he said, winking. She smiled back at him.

“I’ll be waiting by the phone, Love.” she said in a whisper. As Kevin made his way back to the buildings, he caught sight of three guys who stared at him with envy in their eyes. The one on the far left, whose name was Paul, but Kevin called him Pepe because that was his name in Spanish class, the only class he had with him, dropped to his knees and then assumed a grovelling position.

“Your Majesty!” he exclaimed. “What is Thy secret, O Great One?”

“I’m not even sure myself.” Kevin replied. The others followed behind him admiringly. When Kevin got to class, and when he was sure no one was looking, he adjusted himself so he was more comfortable. Sra. Miralles, the teacher, was one who would rather have you sit at your desk, bored as whatever metaphor you could come up with, than allow you to do work from another class, and today was a test day. After the test, Kevin was getting bored, and he noticed that Tina Bates, a lithe brunette gymnast who had turned in her test five minutes earlier than Kevin, was looking bored as well. He got her to make eye contact, and held her gaze, wondering if he could think commands and have her obey them. As a test, he concentrated on the thought that she should start tapping her foot slowly. It worked. He began her mental reprogramming, and soon, she was his to command. He realized, with some embarassment, that she was still tapping her foot, so he made her stop. He mentally dictated what she was to do when she got into her car at the end of the day. She blinked her eyes twice in acknowledgement.

He got up out of his seat as though he were going to sharpen his pencil, then made a weird noise so everyone would look at him. He snagged all their minds in one piercing glance, and made it so they would not notice anything unusual. Their eyes dropped back to their papers, and those who were bored continued looking bored. He had Tina undress for him, but nobody said anything. He grabbed her breast, and she purred with pleasure. Still, everyone followed the ignorance command. He took off his clothes and pressed her up against the wall, inserting his prick and popping her virginity. She moaned and purred and cooed her pleasure, but nobody noticed, except her lover/master, Kevin, who responded by turning up the tempo. Tina moaned louder, and then her cunt clenched up, trying to pull him in all the way. Not satisfied with his current penetration, he made her get on her hands and knees and he penetrated her from behind, shoving himself in all the way and drawing screams from her. He spanked her, and she came each time his hand made contact with her bare buttocks. Her cunt was still squeezing, trying to get him to come so she could milk his cock for all it was worth. Finally, he did come, and they yelled their pleasure together at the top of their lungs. And the class didn’t notice. He had his slave dress, but he kept her panties and bra.

His next class was metal shop, and there was only one girl there, a tough girl named Jessie Schiff. She was always wearing black leather, and no school official had ever gotten her to take off her shades for anything except to put on a welding hood or to fight. Her hair was black, and cropped short, so she looked like a boy from behind, if you were at the wrong angle to see the swell of her breasts. When he walked in, everyone but Jessie looked up at him, so he decided to put them all to sleep. Jessie, who was still wearing her shades and was not looking at him, was the only one awake. She looked up when heads started hitting the tables, and was instantly demanding to know what was going on. After a couple of tries, he found he couldn’t hypnotize her through the shades.

“It’s alright, Jessie.” he said. “I’m not going to hurt you.”

“What did you do to them?” she asked.

“Just a little magic trick.” Kevin replied. “A friend of mine bet me I couldn’t beat you in a fight. That’s why I didn’t skip today.”

“There’s something different about you, Kev.” Jessie said. “First I see you whoop Marty before school and then jump straight up on top of the Math Wing, then I hear about you making out with Renee Gonzales, the unseducible security guard, and now you’re accepting a fight-dare? When did you grow a backbone?”

“Funny.” Kevin said. “Why don’t you look me in the eye and say that?” Jessie took off her shades, and Kevin reached out. She seemed to be about to say something, but when Kevin caught her gaze, she shut up. He focussed his thoughts on her, and suggested mentally that she should take off her clothes.

“Why would I want to do that?” Jessie asked as a disgusted look crossed her face. Again and again Kevin tried to gain control of her, but she seemed immune to his powers.

“What’s going on?” he muttered. “Why isn’t it working?”

“You’re trying to control me, aren’t you?” she asked. She glanced at the boys lying asleep at the tables. “You’re a freaking Vampire...but, how come you can walk in the sun?”

“I’m not a Vampire.” Kevin replied. “At least, not a full Vampire. My father was half Vampire.”

“You mean like Blade, from the comics?” Jessie asked.

“Yep.” he replied. “I’ve got the strength, the healing, the enhanced senses, and the hypnosis, but I guess I have to recharge or something.”

“Vampires can’t hypnotize me.” Jessie said. “I’m what they call a Resistor.”

“And you couldn’t tell me this when you heard the first command, instead of letting me stand here making an ass of myself?”

“I didn’t get what you were trying to do.” Jessie replied. She approached Kevin and took off the leather jacket, revealing nice, hard tits under her brown tank top, then she reached into her backpack and pulled out a wooden stake. “But now that I know you’re part Vampire, I can get right down to business. Goodbye, bloodsucker!” she exclaimed, launching the stake at him, but he dodged with all his vampiric agility, and it splintered on the stone wall.

“Don’t call me bloodsucker!” Kevin yelled, glaring at Jessie. “I do NOT drink blood! I don’t even like the SIGHT of it!”

“Open your mouth.” Jessie commanded. Not wanting a stake through the heart, Kevin did as he was told. Jessie held his mouth open and stuck a dental mirror in there. “No fangs.” Jessie muttered. “I guess the bloodline IS pretty thin. Okay, you get to live.” She put her second stake back in the backpack.

“Thank you.” Kevin sighed. The instructor came in from his office. Startled, it took Kevin a couple of seconds to remember he could control people—or most of them anyway—and put the instructor to sleep. A sudden wild idea came into his head.

“You want to have some fun?” he asked.

“I’m not feeling horny.” Jessie replied. “I’m never horny.”

“You can’t lie to a Vampire, even if the bloodline IS thin.” Kevin said. “I guess telepathy is part of the hypnosis thing, or vice versa. I don’t know, I’m kinda new at this.”

“So I see.” Jessie said. “So I suppose I have to tell you the truth, then. I have to get off once a day or I go crazy, but I already got off today. I killed a Gamma-class bloodsucker at about six this morning."”

“What is it with you and Vampires?” Kevin asked.

“One of them walked in on us one day, a King-level Vampire. Mother let him in, because he had charmed her that evening at the grocery store, then he came up to our room, hypnotized my sister, and made her a Vampire.” Jessie replied. “My sister killed hundreds of people and converted almost as many. I’ve been hunting her children ever since. And maybe I blame myself. If I had stopped him, or stalled him so he couldn’t convert her, she wouldn’t have become a Vampire Princess, and she wouldn’t have killed all those people, or made all those Vampires who killed hundreds more. She has since evolved to a Queen and is running a hive somewhere.”

“Man, that’s rough.” Kevin said.

“No kidding.” Jessie replied.

“So now you’re Jessie the Vampire Slayer?”

“Don’t make fun of me, hellspawn, I’ve still got the stakes, and like an idiot, you put all the witnesses to sleep.”

“Oh, speaking of which, you hungry? I could use a snack.” Kevin said. He awakened the instructor. “Go get snacks for us.” he told him. “Use all the money in your pockets.” The instructor obeyed. “Why did you check behind my teeth for fangs?” he asked Jessie.

“A Vampire’s fangs are retractible, and hidden behind the outer incisors.” Jessie said. “Your teeth are nice, by the way.” True, Kevin had recently had his braces removed. They’d done their jobs. He kept his teeth clean and all that, mostly because he did not relish having to go through hell as Brace Face again. He smiled.

“You wanna make these guys fight?” he asked. “We’ve got another forty-five minutes to kill.”

“Why not?” Jessie said. Kevin commanded the students on the south side of the room to obey voice commands from Jessie, and he took control of the others. They moved to the metal shop, leaving the odd man out, the Teacher’s Pet who sat next to the teacher’s desk, to wait for the teacher to arrive with the snacks. Because of Kevin’s inexperience and Jessie’s inability to control “her fighters” telepathically, they decided to go for one-on-one voice-command only matches with sudden death elimination. By the third match, they were both getting really into it. It seemed as though since they had no will of their own and could not feel pain, they were much stronger than they would normally be. They were lifting objects as massive as they were, and often the commander would have to dodge some piece of metal shop equipment that suddenly was hurled across the makeshift arena. After a near-miss which could have been fatal, the two decided no more weapons.

The snacks arrived, and Jessie and Kevin had their combatants take a break while they munched on the finest the Teachers’ Lounge had to offer. Now that the instructor had arrived, there was no longer an odd man out, so they had the teacher battle his “pet.” Strangely enough, they always seemed to have the same number of warriors left. Whenever Kevin got three wins ahead, Jessie would win three in a row, and so on. Finally, each of them only had one left.

“This is exciting!” Jessie exclaimed. “Take him out, Nelson!” Nelson McLeod charged at his smaller opponent, Jimbo Grimble.

“Uppercut now, Jimbo!” Kevin exclaimed. Jimbo reacted quickly, and gave his opponent an uppercut with a slight left hook. Nelson flew back five feet to land in an unconscious heap. Jessie got mad and charged at Kevin. Although she didn’t have Kevin’s strength, she was fast and furious, and she had years of skill in fighting Vampires. Kevin could take more punishment than her, though, and he wasn’t stupid enough to follow false openings. She punched for his face, and he caught her hand, flipped her over his shoulder, and let her go. She landed near some rod stock, and she grabbed a piece. She swung it at him, but it was steel, not wood. His bruise healed quickly. He grabbed it on the next swing, pulled it from her hands, then bent it around her so she couldn’t move, not even her head.

“Give up?” he asked. She would have nodded if she could.

* * *

“She’s a Resistor, Mother.” Kevin said. “I can’t hypnotize her.” “Not the Vampiric way, no, but it can be done. She would have to let down her defenses, but it could be done.” Kevin’s mother replied.

“I can see where you get your looks.” Jessie whispered. “Too bad you didn’t get her ears, too. I happen to think pointy ears are very sexy, if they’re on a member of the opposite gender.”

“So did my father.” Kevin’s mother said. At Jessie’s glare, she said “Ears like these don’t miss much.”

“Still, I’m starting to think of her as—hopefully—someone I could be friends with, so I thought you should meet her.” Kevin said.

“She seems like a very nice person, once you get past the obsessive behavior.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Jessie asked, suddenly livid.

“This vendetta against all Vampires. Posessing the mutant gene for vampirism does NOT make someone evil. True, it makes them thirst for blood, but many of them are the Vampire equivalent of vegetarians. They only drink blood from animals, usually cattle or pigs, something plentiful. They never drink from humans. To most Vampire hunters, they are known as Repentants, but to Vampires they are called simply cowards.”

“So what can you tell us about his powers?”

“He doesn’t have enough Vampire in him to levitate. I know that much because neither did his father, nor his sister.” the woman said.

“Sister?” Kevin asked.

“She was twelve when you were born. I had to hide her from your father when he was converted. When it’s safe, I’ll arrange a meeting for you.”

“You were talking about his powers...” Jessie prompted, drawing a glare from Kevin. “He can leap a tall building in a single bound, but that’s just what it is, a bound, a jump, a leap. So no jumping off cliffs, at least not those more than eight stories tall. Second, the transformations that Vampires perform are beyond his power. And watch who you try to hypnotize next time, young man.” This last was directed reproachfully at Kevin.

“Is there any special clue I could follow as to which ones are Resistors?” Kevin asked.

“Very strong-willed people most often, but there are also those who are just too stupid to hypnotize, so don’t try it in a sanitarium.”

“Got it.” Kevin replied.

“Don’t you have a class coming up?”

“I suppose so.” Kevin replied. “C’mon, Jessie.” Jessie followed him until their paths diverged, and then she was gone. Kevin watched where she went. She was a genuine challenge, and it would be a true conquest if he could have her. Tina Bates, whom he’d reprogrammed in Spanish class, was in the class with him. He made sure the rest of the class wouldn’t notice anything unusual, and he had her suck his dick. His willing slave deep-throated his cock, and then used her tongue to give her master the greatest pleasure. When he shot his load into her mouth, she hungrily swallowed it all, then licked his prick clean. In return for the excellent blowjob she’d just given him, he tit-sucked her to climax. He took away one of his classmates’ gym bags, which had contained their books, but he made them think they had brought the books in a stack, not in a bag. He had his slave go completely limp, and he folded her into a little bundle and put her in the bag, then he stuffed her clothes in on top of her, and had her go to sleep. His slave obeyed.

He commanded the class not to notice that he and Tina were gone, and commanded the instructor to think they had both taken and aced the test. The class was half over, and Kevin wanted to visit Jessie. He put the whole class to sleep, except for Jessie, and they would awaken when the lunch bell rang. They climbed to the roof of the auditorium and looked over at the mountains on the horizon, blue with distance. It was obvious she was uncomfortable alone with him. When she left, supposedly so she could be in class on time, because her next class was clear across the campus, he got Tina out of her bag and fucked her until the end-of-lunch bell rang, then he dressed her and sent her on to her next class. That class and the next were devoid of sexy ladies, so Kevin had no exercise of his mental powers there. He was glad when the day was over. Tina would go directly to his place and wait for him in the treehouse. Renee would wait lustily by the phone and would come when he called. Kevin was trying to work out a way to gain control and possession of Jessie, but that could wait. Sexually, he was sated and happy. There was a disconcerting feeling of being watched, but Kevin ignored it. It was probably just his mother—he had come to accept her as such—watching over him as mothers will.

“Master?” the Skeleton asked.

“What is it?” Demanded a voice from within the coffin at the Skeleton’s feet.

“The boy you had me watch, Master.” the Skeleton expalined. “His powers have emerged. It is as you said. He is weak, barely as powerful as an Epsilon.”

“Did you hear that, my apprentice?” the voice asked.

“Indeed, Master.” replied a voice from a second coffin. The sun dipped below the horizon and the two Vampires emerged. One, the Master, was an Alpha-class Vampire whose powers knocked on the door of becoming one of the Vampiric Nobles. His hair was jet black and slicked back in the manner of a man playing Dracula, his widow’s peak very pronounced. He was dressed in the manner of one who was well off, one whose family had amassed a great fortune. The fortune, in fact, was his, amassed long ago from victims who had had money when they had become his servants, his apprentices. The other had a curly mane of brown hair and was dressed in a manner more modest than that of his Master. One who had seen this man would have recognized the nose and the shape of the eyes in the young hybrid being discussed.

“It seems your son has come into his powers at last.” He turned to the Skeleton. “How goes the search for the daughter?”

“Poorly, I’m afraid, Master. She has been well hidden.”

“It matters not. When we are ready, we will move in on Kevin and use him to force his mother to reveal the girl’s location.”

Kevin remained quiet as his birth mother argued with his adoptive mother. The latter quoted laws pertaining to adoption, the former preached what she thought was best for “the boy.” They bitched and prattled and swore and postured until Kevin was sick. When his adoptive mother started making personal comments, Kevin snapped.

“Stop it!” he roared, interrupting the two women, who turned to glare at him, but stopped when they saw the expression on his face. He was truly pissed. They both looked scared, but he didn’t care. “Why don’t you STOP BITCHING and come to some kind of AGREEMENT?” he snarled. The two ladies muttered apologies, and Kevin left. He was tired of listening to them. Both of them. Ever since he’d discovered that his biological parents were hybrid Pretenders, his life had become a major headache. He leaned against the wall to reflect. Pretenders, according to his mother, were members of the various races who lived among and pretended to be humans. His mother had been a half-human half-Elf. His father had been half-human half-Vampire. The result had been Kevin, who was more human than anything, but had traits of Elf and Vampire. So far he had discovered his enhanced strength, agility and senses, and how to hypnotize people. Those were all the Vampiric powers he had. He figured that with that alone, he could be quite an adequate vigilante if he wanted to. He had yet to discover any of his Elven talents, if he had inherited any. Part of the reason for that was because he didn’t really know what kind of powers Elves had. His mother could teach him, but only if she was allowed to visit him often enough to do so. Kevin opened the door to his room and shut it behind him. He calmed himself down by caressing Tina’s face and upper body as she lay naked and in an extremely deep trance in his bed. He had gained control of her easily, the same with Renee, the once-unseducable cop/security guard from his high school, who was currently sleeping in the closet, naked just like Tina. He sensed his mother coming, so he hid Tina in the closet. She knocked on the door, and Kevin gave his permission to enter.

“It looks like she’s going to let me teach you your Elven powers.” she said.

“Yes!” Kevin exclaimed.

“Okay, then, let’s get started.” she said. “Outside, now, mister.”

“Do I have to practice in this?” Kevin asked, gesturing at his outfit. “It’s kinda hot for any kind of strenuous exercise—or casting fire-spells or whatever.”

“Fine.” she said. “Find yourself something cooler.” Kevin went to his drawer. His mother didn’t move until he gave her one of his looks. While the charm around her neck protected her against vampiric mind-control, Kevin could still express himself very well with his eyes—rather like Clint Eastwood, he thought. When she was gone, he changed his shirt and put on some cutoffs, then made sure his mindslaves were well-hidden. He locked the door on his way out, making sure he had the key with him, and then he followed his mother outside. Once there, his mother gave him his first instructions.

“Picture in your mind a place you’d rather be and concentrate on it.” she said. Kevin did that, and with a bright flash of light and a brief feeling similar to falling, he suddenly found himself at Disneyland. His mother appeared at his side two seconds later.

“How did you find me?”

“Everyone comes here when they first learn to teleport.” his mother replied with a grin. “Now, since we’re here, can you teleport to the roof of Cinderella’s Castle?” Kevin did so, and his mother applauded from a graceful stance on the tower’s spire. “Not bad, son.” she said. “Now, let’s go home.”

“Aww, can’t I at least hug Pooh before we go?” Kevin joked. His mother got the joke, surprisingly. His adoptive mother never would have. Kevin teleported to the roof of his house. Over the next few months, after schoolwork and chores, Kevin’s mother helped him figure out which Elven powers had been bred out of him, and which ones he still had, how strong they were, and how to do it. By the end of the school year, Kevin had learned how to teleport, to make himself invisible, to take on different shapes, and how to manipulate certain aspects of nature with poetry. Kevin now knew that he had to be careful what poems he read aloud, lest he accidentally trigger some change in people or things. Jessie hung around with him, and occasionally he had the distinct pleasure of helping her stake a Vampire. He had even invented a rhyme to bring hydrogen together and make a comma-sized fake (and very temporary) sun. Of course, proximity to the second sun meant that there was a lot of heat generated. He only used that rhyme once. His third-degree sunburn was enough to convince him that there was only need for one sun in this solar system. On the plus side, however, the vampires in the area died—the fullblooded ones, anyway. Jessie didn’t seem to mind the sunburn, as long as there were burned and destroyed bloodsuckers wafting through the air as ashes.

Halfway through the summer, his mother decided he was as fully trained as he was going to get. The fact that he didn’t have as many powers as full Elves meant he got to spend more time studying up on the powers he DID have. His spellcasting was still a little sloppy, but then, who WAS a perfect spellcaster? Tina rarely got to think for herself because she was constantly in her Master’s power, and Renee spent all her off hours in trance, providing him with sexual pleasure whenever he wasn’t being observed. All in all, life was good. It seemed to Kevin that he’d been invited into Heaven.

He couldn’t have been more wrong.

Somewhere in the darkness, a powerful Alpha Vampire and his apprentice watched the youth with scorn. Despite his combination of Elf and Vampire powers, he was no match for them. Soon, the time would come when the boy must confront his father.

“Kevin.” The voice belonged to his adoptive father, the man he’d called Dad for most of his life.

“Coming.” Kevin said, hiding Renee and making himself presentable. With a muttered rhyme, he banished the smell of sex from the room before removing the wards that prevented teleportation and unauthorized entry as well as psychic and sonic leakage. Finally he unlocked the door and allowed the older man to be seated at Kevin’s computer chair.

“Kevin, the past few days have been...well, they’ve been tough. You’ve got all these new powers and everything, and I’m not exactly sure what all you can do, but...” He paused, searching to find the right words. “Son, I’m not sure where I fit into your picture, but I want you to know that I’ll always love you, boy. I know you’ll make the right decisions as to how to use your powers. I got no illusions as to the way I’ve raised you, Kevin. I just hope you’ll remember me when I’m dead and gone and you’re still out kicking all those bloodsuckers’ butts.”

“I could never forget you, Dad.” Kevin said, hugging his adoptive father tightly.

“Uh, son...Papa can’t breathe...” his father managed to gasp out. Kevin released him, wiping a tear from his eye.

“Sorry, Dad.” he said, and managed a smile.

A scream awoke Kevin. He didn’t even bother to hide Tina. He simply morphed some clothes and bounded downstairs. His adoptive mother was being attacked by Ghouls. Kevin fought his way through the horde of shambling, half-dead zombies until he got to the object of their attention, and then he wrapped himself around her and teleported to the roof. Safe at last, they stopped to catch their breath. Kevin was thankful that his adoptive siblings were visiting their father at the police station. At least there they’d have a whole bunch of cops around to shoot the ghouls to pieces if they were attacked.

“What were those?”

“Ghouls.” Kevin replied. “Mom told me about them. Vampires create ghouls by piercing their finger with their fang and placing a drop of their blood on the victim’s tongue. Vampire blood is several times as addictive as cocaine, and the Vampire’s venom has mind-control properties, and the combination causes them to become immortal slaves of the Vampire, but prolonged exposure to very evil Vampires causes flesh to decompose at an accelerated rate. After a few weeks serving a strong Vampire, the Ghoul becomes a Skeleton, and then it’s too late to save him.”

“Too true.” a voice said behind them. Kevin whirled to find a Skeleton standing on the roof. “Once the skeleton stage is achieved, we are forever bound to obey our Master. Master has decreed I give you this message. Unless you surrender yourself to him, he will convert all those you care about, starting with your Vampire-hunter friend, into Vampires.”

“Head back to sick bay, Bones.” Kevin replied, then with Vampiric speed, he shattered the skeleton, kicking each of its bones down to the ground.

“This won’t help you!” the skeleton called. “Ghouls and skeletons are the Vampire’s daytime agents, but once the sun goes down, he will handle you himself!”

Kevin knew this was true. The only problem was: What was he going to do about it? Well, he knew one thing for sure, he needed to check on his two thralls. He teleported into his room, liberated Tina and Renee, and let them know what was going on. Afterwards, he teleported himself and them to the roof (fully clothed, of course), and there picked up his adoptive mother, and they all teleported to the police station.

“I hate safehouses.” Jessie muttered. “No room to move around if someone attacks.”

“I insisted on one with a big back yard, Jessie.” Kevin replied. “You can kick butt all you want to out there.”

“What if someone attacks while we’re in here?”

“I’ll teleport us outside.” Kevin replied. “Relax.”

“I can’t relax when there’s a dangerous Alpha Vampire out there, waiting to pounce.” she replied. She was wearing a leather skirt, a white tank top, and her jacket. Her nipples were visibly hard under the tank top, making a tent through her white cotton bra and her tank top. Woman-juices ran down her inner thighs. She was really aroused. He’d never seen her this wet, even when fighting Vampires. She saw the tent his penis was making in his pants, and her breathing became even more labored. Kevin could hear her highly-aroused heartbeat, could smell the pheromones coming from her body. Suddenly she grabbed him, pulled his pants down, pulled off his shorts, and threw him to the couch. Her soaked panties hit the floor, and she straddled him, then moved herself over his penis and guided him in as though he were a virgin. She rode him fiercely, coming again and again and again until finally he shot his load into her. She was a violent, ferocious lover with a hunger Kevin had not seen in any of his previous encounters. He was hard again in minutes, and she milked him for pleasure again and again, while a Bengal tiger printed on an old, black blanket watched unmoved. Kevin heard a noise outside, and they were quickly back to normal. They gathered the group together, and everyone was armed and ready. Crossbows were loaded with wooden stakes, waterguns were filled with holy water, crosses were around necks, etc.

Ghouls and skeletons started crashing through the window. Kevin and Jessie took care of the underlings as quickly and efficiently as they could. The real fight had not yet begun. A bat flew in the broken window, easily avoiding fired stakes. It morphed into a humanoid shape, and there stood the apprentice to the Alpha Vampire.

“Hello, Kevin.” the Vampire said. “I’ve been watching you.”

“Let me guess, you’re my father.” Kevin said. The Vampire nodded. “I wish I could say I was glad to see you, Pop, but you don’t look very remorseful for what you’ve been doing since you were made a full Vampire.”

“And why should I? I’ve learned to love it.” the Vampire replied. A second Vampire flew in, and it too dodged flying stakes. “Kevin, I’d like you to meet my Master, soon to be yours as well.

“Hell no he ain’t.” Kevin replied. He teleported himself and the others outside. The two Vampires misted and coalesced in the midst of the group. Jessie began hitting Kevin’s father, the nearest of the two, with her wooden staff. Kevin stayed on the defensive until someone else hit the Alpha Vampire, which caused him to turn toward them. Kevin then squirted the Alpha Vampire in the back of the head with holy water, which Jessie had had blessed at the Vatican just to be sure. Steam rose from the places where the holy water touched the vampire, and he screamed in pain. He turned in rage to Kevin, then backhanded him across the yard. Kevin tried to get to his feet, but the Alpha was on him. A lance of sharp pain alerted Kevin to the presence of fangs in his neck. Pain, fear and rage gave Kevin the strength to break three of the Vampire’s ribs and get him off of his back. An instinctive rubbing of the wound revealed that the Vampire had left one of his fangs in his neck. Kevin pulled it out, but the Vampire smiled as pain began to flow through Kevin’s veins as the Vampire venom began to work its way through Kevin’s system.

“Soon, you shall be one of us. You cannot resist, Kevin. Nothing can save you.” the Vampire gloated. Kevin was doubled over in pain. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of his mother taking a beating from his father.

“Avalon! Aid your children!” Kevin cried in desperation. Suddenly the yard became foggy. Low-hanging storm clouds moved in to obscure the stars, and thunder rumbled across the land. The mists began to swirl around Kevin, flowing through him, easing his pain, replacing it with a strength he had never felt. The mists retreated then to the edge of the yard, but the storm remained. The Alpha Vampire was busily avoiding death at the hands of Kevin’s friends. Kevin roared his rage and shot lightning out of his fingers, striking the Vampire. As the Alpha turned, his Vampiric sight allowed him to see Kevin charging at him with full Vampiric speed, fangs bared, eyes glowing, with a fireball forming on each hand. He barely managed to avoid being fried by Kevin’s hot touch. His sight also allowed him to see that Kevin’s aura had transformed. It was no longer alternating between looking like a human, an Elf and a Vampire. Now his aura resembled a reddish-silver flame that flickered and licked about his body, brightening as he drew natural energy into himself.

“How is this possible?” the Alpha demanded.

“The desperate plea I made to Avalon was answered.” Kevin replied. “You now face the combined powers of an Alpha Vampire and an Elf Royal, with the weaknesses of neither.”

“Impossible!” the Alpha roared, charging the youth. As the Vampire’s fist was about to connect, Kevin remade his skin from diamond, and the Vampire broke some bones in his hand. As the Alpha screamed in pain, Kevin grabbed him and threw him to the place where he had bitten Kevin. He returned his skin to normal, then faced the bloodsucker.

“Ground below, stop this fool, pull him into a magma pool.” Kevin said, and the ground opened up, leaving nothing below the Vampire but molten rock. The Vampire took flight, overing over the fissure.

“Lake of fire, heed my say; seize with hands of flame my prey.” Kevin said, and grasping hands made of lava reached up from the pool to grab at the Vampire. The Alpha responded by soaring higher.

“Let frozen rain be your bane!” Kevin yelled, and sleet and hail began to pelt the Vampire from above. He was forced into the grasp of the fire-hands, and they incinerated him in their grip. Kevin’s father watched his master’s death in awe, then turned to Kevin. “You may have defeated Luthven, but you shall not defeat me.” his father said. Kevin closed the fissure with a gesture and turned to face his father.

“We don’t have to do this, Father.” Kevin said. “Let me help you. With the powers I’ve gained, I can rid you of the evil of your former Master.”

“You cannot help me, son.” his father said. “I do not WANT to be helped.”

There were tears in Kevin’s eyes the next time he looked at his father. “The sun has risen.” he said simply. Kevin’s father charged, fangs bared. Kevin sidestepped the lunge. “I’m sorry.” he said, then, with a gesture, dismissed the storm clouds. He sank to his knees and squeezed his eyes shut against the pain of hearing his father’s screams. He had no idea how long he knelt there, weeping, before he felt Jessie’s hand on his shoulder. He saw compassion in her eyes when he looked into them. Jessie knew the pain of losing a loved one. A strong, silver glow surrounded his mother, who also lent her support. Avalon’s magic had made the woman as powerful as a full Elf Royal. Kevin thanked the two silently before pushing away from the Earth with the inner strength given him by the combination of Vampire venom and Avalon’s magic. He knew he had become something new, but he wasn’t sure what. He was no longer a hybrid, that was for certain. Perhaps eventually he would figure out what to call his new Kind, but until then, he was himself and nothing else. Perhaps there would be more someday when he felt confident enough in his new powers to take apprentices and teach them. The beautiful sunrise and the thrill of flight acted as a balm against the pain in Kevin’s soul. He would carry the memory of his father’s death screams with him to the grave. He closed his eyes and thought of Jessie and the beautiful thing they had shared before the battle. It was time to release Tina and Renee. He had found something that mindslaves could not duplicate.
