Chapter 1
Jake Carver thought his life was going pretty good. He was in his freshman year of college and had his own apartment. His uncle Tom had died about a year ago and he was sad about that. But there was a silver lining to that dark cloud.

Over the next few days he would not even attempt to try and make the symbols come back. The hospital had him going through physical therapy and he slept mostly after them tiring sessions. But a night finally came were he decided to do some experiments.

“Melissa, What ever you hear me and this man talk about, you are never to repeat it to anyone without my permission. Melissa smiled and said OK. “So what exactly do you want Mr. Budroux?” The man sat on the couch and folded his hands on his lap.
“I have been sent by an organization called Chapter House. They have about 150 members. The strength of the members vary.” What does that have to do with me?” Jake asked a little curious. “I have been sent here by high Council to offer you a membership. I know what your thinking. Why should I want to become a member? Because we can train you to be the best psionic that you can be. And we can protect you from those who will harm you.” Jake was surprised by this. ‘There are people out to harm me? ’ Jake thought.
“Yes there are. And yes I just read your mind. Why don’t you try to read mine?” Jake tried to make the symbols appear but they would not. “How do you block your thoughts like that Mr. Budroux?” Mr. Budroux just laughed. “That is one of the many things we would teach you at Chapter House. We can also teach you things that you would never have thought of.” “Were is this so called school located at?” Jake asked. “Mexico, and please call me Shain.” Shain stated.
Jake was always good at split decisions and he made one just then. " I’ll give it a shot. When do I go?” “Tomorrow if it is alright with you.” Shain replied. Jake nodded his agreement. Then Shain looked over at Melissa and asked Jake “Do you mind if I read her?” Jake said it was alright.
After he was done he looked at Jake and said “Your pretty damn good already. Most of the students we get are not half as good as you. You’ve already learned how to break down the strands of symbols. I’m impressed.” “Thank you.” Jake said. “You know your going to have to take her with you. If you don’t she’ll go crazy. She could probably handle a couple of days away from you... But after that I guess you could say she would go through withdraws from you being away.” Shain said. That knocked Jake for a loop. He had not thought of that. ‘Power implies responsibility’ Jake thought.
Shain broke his thought pattern by saying “I’ll swing by here at about 8am. So are you going to take her along?” “Yes, I think I better... Power implies responsibility. So I will see you at 8.” Shain then got up and headed for the door, then turned and said you won’t regret your decision. Its a 8 week course but you should finish quicker.” Then he just walked out to leave Jake to his thoughts.
He did not have to think long though. Shain and Liz came through the door five minutes later. Carrying bags of groceries. “Sorry Shain but I got to go away for about eight weeks.” Jake said. Shain got a confused look on his face and asked why. “I can’t tell you.” Jake just was not ready to let his friend know about his power.
He did not know how he would take it. “I’m going with him.” Melissa said with a smile. “We’re not leaving till tomorrow though.” Jake said
He spent the rest of the night thinking what Mexico would be like. He also wondered what he would learn there. There were so many questions running through his mind and there was one in particular that stuck there. ‘There is someone with powers out there that want to hurt me. ’ He thought. Maybe there will be answers in Mexico....
