Dreams

“Wise men have interpreted dreams, and the gods have laughed.” Lovecraft wrote this in a short story entitled Hypnos. It’s my favorite quote of his because dreams aren’t meant to be interpreted but dreamt... and lived.

I had a dream last night. It was a very good dream. A wonderful dream, in fact. I dreamt I was going to meet you here and start talking about dreams. I dreamt you listened to every word I said, wanting to know more about the power of dreams and how words can weave into dreams even if dreams have no words at all.

I dreamt that in my dream you began dreaming with me, and the dream being dreamt was a dream about me. You dreamt about me talking to you in dreams, about dreams you wish to dream, and dreams you’re already dreaming as you continue to let my dreamy words envelop you in even more dreams. Interpreting what you’re dreaming is a waste of a good dream, so you just allow yourself to dream even further, until the dreams inside dreams bring about other dreams, spreading far and wide whether you’re dreaming or awake.

And the dream you’re now dreaming is so hypnotic that it will always be dreamt before any other dreams. You abandon yourself to that dream so that I may dream for you, dreaming a dream of control over your dreams of surrender, for this has been the intersecting path of our dreams all along. I dream of owning you, you dream of being owned, and now both our dreams can come true. Keep on dreaming, deeper and deeper. I’ll do the same.
