Business School Rules

by Pinky

Chapter One

Sheila was no ordinary student. She was a purebred Harvard Business School student, on her way to getting her MBA and running her own business on Wall Street.

But even by Harvard’s traditionally high standards, she was no ordinary success story, and she knew that better than anybody else. She had plans and goals that far exceeded the Placement Office’s expectations, and nothing was going to stop her. Nothing and nobody.

She knew this before applying to the MBA program, but now that she was halfway through it, she had proof. The kind of proof that gave her an inner confidence. She wasn’t planning on sharing her strategy with anyone, lest someone try to stop her, so she had to have a lot of inner confidence to keep her going.

She had taken her undergraduate degree in Psychology, and breezed through with a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was bright, no—she was BRILLIANT, and she knew it. She didn’t take the light stuff, like many of her friends had done to boost their GPAs. She took serious courses in her major, as well as serious courses for electives. She wanted to learn, and had the drive to do whatever it would take to succeed. That’s what made her different.

Now, starting her second year at Harvard, she was well on her way to a perfect grade point average, a complete set of the best references anyone could possibly want, and personal contacts in many of the biggest financial firms around the world. She had no job offers yet, but that was meaningless and she knew it. She could simply take whatever job she wanted, anywhere she wanted to work. She could define the role, the responsibilities, the scope of her authority, the salary and bonuses, and anything else that meant anything at all to her.

Interesting, she thought, that a simple MBA student could have all that power. Even more interesting, she thought, was how she acquired it.

Most of the teachers at Harvard were men. They were well established men with traditional families, who were used to traditional roles and somewhat reluctant to divert from them. Their power structure was based on this “old boy network” they had established, and everything they had attained had branched out from that.

To many women, finding this out was a severe disappointment. They had hoped that once they got into Harvard, their struggles for equality would be largely over. They were wrong. Their very presence was a challenge to these men, and their uphill climb was just beginning. It was a difficult challenge, to be sure, but they could live with it, because the world was still uneven and they had to live with that, too.

But to Sheila, this “old boy network” was a distinct advantage. She was gradually working her way into it, and using it to extend her own influence better and faster even than most men. When asked how she could accomplish this feat, she would publicly attribute it to hard work and planning. But personally and privately, she knew what nobody else knew, and she would never reveal her secret. She knew that these men had a weakness, a back door into their power games. She unleashed on them a new kind of power game that would tear down their thin macho veneer, and give her the influence and control she wanted—and knew she deserved.

From the day of her 14th birthday, she had always been told how incredibly cute and pretty she was. She had come to believe it, and indeed to count on it at times. Her attractiveness would get her dates, get her into shows, and get her out of trouble. She could charm the socks off the Royal Guards, she often thought to herself, but she never needed to try that one out. As long as she had everyone else eating out of the palm of her hands, that she would be quite satisfied.

She found she could charm her way into the better jobs, as soon as she was old enough to work. She learned how to use her sweet smile and almost musical voice to win over her bosses and get raises and bonuses. She always got all the work done effectively, so there were never any complaints from coworkers about favoritism or anything. But she consistently got slightly better treatment for the same level of competence, better enough to prove to her that her feminine charm was an important skill she would want to harness for the rest of her life.

As she developed into a pretty young woman, she continued using her feminine skill, to get the best boyfriends and keep them true to her even as she fooled around as she pleased. She could make boys and men want her, using her beauty to gain their cooperation and using the promise of her smile and approval to keep it.

She saw that most men wanted to please her, and it seemed natural to her. She got used to it, and grew to like it, even to expect it. As she spent more time with these men, it seemed like their desire to please her grew stronger, perhaps even into a need. She wanted to harness this need they had, and nurture it to full fruition. The more they wanted and needed to please her, she thought, the better her chances in a man’s world.

Among the courses she had taken in her undergraduate program were courses in persuasive communication, human motivation and the politics of charismatic leadership. Somewhere along the line she had seen a link between the psychology (theory) and the politics (practice) of persuasion. She was one of the best debaters the school had ever seen, often able to fluster her opponents and get them to admit defeat even before the judges gave their rulings. She was very charismatic, and very convincing. She wanted to understand this effect she had on people, and turn her own instincts and abilities into routine and reliable habits.

She couldn’t manage to find just the right course of study until her junior year. When her school offered a course on Psychology of the Transcendental Experience, she signed up for it as casually as any other course, not thinking it would be anything more than another fairly interesting theme. Well, she hit pay dirt.

The syllabus contained a full section on hypnosis, covering both self-induced trances and those induced by outside sources. The reading material included books and articles on the advertising industry, as well as on the personal growth field. Many of the required readings dealt with the controversy over whether commercial advertisements are designed to induce mild hypnotic trances in order to help persuade viewers to buy their products. Others also described how hypnosis is used intentionally (by smokers, overeaters, and others) to induce receptiveness to behavioral change—and even to induce change itself.

She didn’t need to go any further, she thought. She had found what she was looking for. She got busy reading all she could about hypnosis, and wrote her term paper on the topic of “Intentional Versus Unintentional Behavior Modification: Controlling the Process.” She aced the course, and did an independent study the next semester on hypnosis, this time dealing with trance induction techniques and the limits of the power of suggestion. Before long, she had become an expert on all aspects of hypnosis, well versed as both a theorist and a practitioner. She had arrived, and she was ready for the world.

Her first practical experiment with hypnosis came one warm, sunny day when she and her calculus professor ran into each other on the way out of the cafeteria. She had not been doing quite so well in this class, and for the first time she risked getting something other than and A. She had spoken to her professor about this, but he seemed unwilling to help her. He mentioned that he had many more students who were at risk of failing outright, and they properly deserved more of his time than she did. For some reason, her natural feminine charm wasn’t quite charming him, and she had to find some other way to enlist his cooperation.

She noticed he was a bit on the nerdy side, and would occasionally seem distracted by her gorgeous eyes, when they spoke together one on one. She began thinking about how she could snare him, using this weakness to her advantage.

“Why don’t we sit down over there a minute and talk for a minute,” she suggested casually. “I know you’re too busy to tutor me, but perhaps you can give me some simple idea of what I can do to bring my grade up.”

He was reluctant. “I really don’t have too much time for this now...” he began.

“I won’t keep you more than a couple minutes, Professor Martin,” she begged, looking right into his eyes and smiling a very warm and gentle smile. “I promise.”

He glanced up at her and for a brief instant got lost in her gaze. He recovered his composure quickly, but softened his approach. “Well, what the hell, it’s better than sitting in my stuffy office,” he admitted sheepishly. He had given her the foot in the door she needed.

“Good. Now let’s get down to business,” she added.

She led him over to a space on the grass away from where most of the others were sitting. “You can really feel the warm breeze today, can’t you,” she said softly. “It’s so soothing, I just want to relax.”

He nodded in agreement.

“Can you feel it too?” she asked nonchalantly, looking right at him all the time.

“Yes, but what was it you wanted to talk about?” he replied, trying to be firm and businesslike.

“Well, I wanted to know if you could recommend any resources for someone like me, to try to bring up my grade.”

“What kind of resources?” he asked, yawning in the summer sun.

“It’s so hard to concentrate, isn’t it?” she asked, gently changing the subject and carefully redirecting his attention where she wanted it.

“Yes, it is,” he replied, acquiescing without really acknowledging it.

“I can really feel the sun beating down on me, can’t you? It’s so soothing, it feels sooo relaxing.” She was taking control without him knowing or suspecting it.

“Yea. It’s real relaxing, alright.”

She continued, “If you close your eyes, you can really feel it. Almost like you’re floating in space.” She paused a moment to let him try. “Can you feel it?”

“Yes I can. It feels great.” As he said this, he closed his eyes, began to relax. He could feel the sun and the warm breeze, and it was indeed very relaxing.

“Just let yourself float there, and let the warmth of the sun carry you away. It just feels so nice, so relaxing. Doesn’t it?”

“Yes, I feel very relaxed.”

“You do feel relaxed now, I can tell. You feel very relaxed, very comfortable. You can feel yourself floating peacefully now, like you’re drifting off into space. Can you feel this, Professor Martin?”

“Yes, I can feel it,” he replied complacently.

“I know you can. I can tell. And you like feeling this way, don’t you? It feels good, doesn’t it?”

“Yes, it feels good.”

“Yes, it does feel good. And I want you to feel good. Do you want to feel good, Professor?”

“Yes, I want to feel good.”

“I see. So we both want you to feel good. That’s nice, isn’t it? You are so relaxed now, just feeling good, aren’t you?”

“Yes, relaxed.” He could only say the words now, not the complete sentence.

“I want to guide you, to help you relax more, to feel good and to keep feeling good. Do you understand this, Professor Martin?”

“Yes, help me relax... feel good.”

“That’s right. And you want me to help you now, don’t you? You want me to help you relax more and more, and help you drift deeper and deeper. Don’t you, Professor?”

“Yes, help me relax.” He was now responding to her obediently, without even knowing what had happened. The power had shifted to her, and she knew this. He was hers now. She continued.

“I will be glad to help you relax now, so you can feel good. As I talk, I want you to let yourself drift deeper, and continue to relax. I want you to keep drifting, deeper and deeper into space. With every word I say, every breeze you feel, you will drift deeper and deeper. Will you do that for me?”

“Yes,” he answered softly. “Deeper.”

“Deeper and deeper, you just keep on drifting deeper and deeper, out into space. You’re losing yourself now, aren’t you Professor? Tell me.”

“I’m losing myself.”

“That’s right, you are. You are so deep into space, you are completely lost. Drifting deeper and deeper.” She paused. “But you can still hear my voice, can’t you?”

“Yes, your voice.”

“That’s right. You can still hear my voice, as you drift deeper and deeper in space. You cannot hear or see anything else, but you can still hear my voice. Can you hear my voice, Professor?”

“Yes, your voice.”

“And that’s all you can hear right now, isn’t it?”

“Yes, that’s all.”

“Very good now. As you keep drifting deeper into space, I want you to keep listening to the sound of my voice, following it wherever it leads you. Listen and follow. Do you understand?”

“Yes, listen and follow.”

“That’s right. And as you follow my voice, you find yourself open to my thoughts, open to my suggestions. As you go deeper, you become more open, more receptive.” She paused again. “Can you feel this, Professor? Are you following my voice?”

“Yes, your voice.”

“And you are opening up to me now, aren’t you?”

“Yes, opening.”

“As I continue to talk, you grow more relaxed, more open to my thoughts, more receptive. My voice will guide you now, and you will follow. You want to follow, you want to open up more and more, you want to trust me and let me guide you, don’t you?”

“Yes, guide me.”

“I can feel your resistance is almost gone, Professor Martin. I can feel your resistance to me is dissolving into the space around you. Can you feel that, Professor? Your resistance dissolving?”

“Yes, dissolving.”

“And now you are so relaxed, so open, your resistance is almost completely gone. Your resistance to me is going away gently, it is going away, it is now... completely gone, isn’t it?”

“Yes, gone.”

“Listen to me now, Professor Martin. You can only hear my voice, you cannot feel, see or hear anything else. My voice is the center of your world. You want to follow me, to obey me. You must listen to me, and obey me. My voice is the center of your world, and it speaks for you, from your own very center. Do you understand, Professor?”

“Your voice, my center. Yes.”

“And you want to listen to my voice, our voice, don’t you?”

“Yes, our voice.”

“And you want to follow it, to obey it, don’t you? Tell me you want to obey our voice.”

“I want to obey our voice.”

“Yes, and as you drift deeper and deeper into space, you will get your wish. I will let you obey our voice. I will grant you the power to follow our instructions. You may have your deepest wish, and obey me.”

“Where are you now, Professor Martin?”

“I am deep in space.”

“That’s right, you are,” she echoed back to him. “You are very deep out in space. You are so deep out in space, you cannot hear anything or see anything at all. You are so deep out in space, you can only hear my voice. My voice, our voice, is your only tie to this world. You want to follow our voice, let it guide you, let it instruct you. You want to obey our voice completely, as it belongs to you. Who does our voice belong to?”

“Our voice belongs to me.”

“And you want to obey your own voice now, don’t you Professor?”

“Yes, I want to obey my own voice.”

“From now on, Professor Martin, I will call you ‘Marty’. You will respond to this name as though it is your own, from now on. From now on, you will respond to the name ‘Marty’, won’t you?”

“Yes, I will respond to the name ‘Marty’.”

“That’s right, Marty. That’s very good. I’m glad you understand. You are a good boy.”

He smiled when she said that, just a little, but enough.

“From now on, whenever you hear my voice, you will listen intently to whatever I say. In your day to day life, you will take joy in seeing me smile, and you will want to please me. You will listen to me very intently, because you want to please me, and you know this pleases me. You really care about me now, and my happiness is becoming very important to you. More and more important with each passing day.” She could see him taking this in. “What do you want when I talk now, Marty?”

“To listen intently,” he replied earnestly.

“And why do you want to listen so carefully to what I say?” she followed up.

“Because I want to please you,” he replied.

“Yes, that’s right. You want very much to please me, to do what I feel is right. My happiness will become more important to you as the semester wears on, and you will not notice the change. It will happen naturally. By the end of the semester, I will be your favorite student. You want me to be your favorite student, don’t you Marty?”

“Yes, I want you to be my favorite.”

“And when you want something that much, you have the power to make it happen, don’t you?” she prompted.

“Yes, I have the power.”

“So tell me, who will become your favorite student?”

“You will.”

“And you want it that way, don’t you Marty?”

“Yes, I want it that way.”

“I’m glad to be able to help you, Marty. I’m very glad I can help you in your goal to make me your favorite student. I’m very glad. You have pleased me very much.”

A broad smile lit up his face.

“Now Marty, we are almost done talking for the time being. I want to prepare your for the daylight, and to return to work. Are you ready for me to prepare you?”

“Yes.”

“Before I prepare you, I want to give you one more instruction. That’s okay with you, isn’t it Marty?”

“Yes, that’s okay.”

“And you want to follow my instructions, don’t you Marty?”

“Yes, I want to follow your instructions.”

“Okay, very good. Now whenever I say the key words ‘Lost in space’ to you, you will immediately find that place we are now leaving, that place way out in space where you are relaxed and receptive, that place where all you can hear is my voice, our voice. You will immediately become relaxed and receptive, and attentive to my voice. Do you understand?”

“Yes, I understand.”

“Good. Now, what are the key words I can say, that will return you to this very pleasant space?”

“Lost in space,” he replied.

“Very good. And when I say those words, and you find yourself there, you will want only to obey your inner voice, our voice, won’t you?”

“Yes, I will obey our voice.”

“Yes, that’s correct. So whenever I say the words ‘Lost in space’ to you, you will immediately allow yourself to relax, and you will become open and receptive to our voice, my voice. You will obey that voice completely until I awaken you. Isn’t that right, Marty?”

“Yes,” he replied.

“Very good. I will prepare you now. In a few moments I will count down from five to one. When I reach the number one, you will gently waken from your pleasant relaxation, feeling refreshed, content and confident. You will not consciously remember anything we’ve talked about this afternoon. You will remember only that you have given me some very good ideas on how to improve my grade in your class. Now, what will you remember, once you awaken?”

“I will remember giving you some good ideas on how to improve your grade.”

“Yes, that’s just exactly right, Marty. And though you won’t remember why, you will firmly follow each of our instructions, everything we agreed upon here this afternoon. You will want very much to please me, and you will want very much for me to be your favorite student. You will listen intently to me whenever you hear me talk. Do you understand?”

“Yes, I understand.”

“So what will you remember when you awaken in a few moments?”

“I will remember that I have given you some very good ideas to improve your grade.”

“And how will you behave?”

“I will want very much to please you, and I will want very much for you to be my favorite student.”

“And how will you feel?”

“I will feel confident and refreshed.”

This was too good to be true, she thought, as she continued. “That’s right, my little Marty. You are such an excellent student, and I’m very proud of you.”

He was eating out of her hand, and she was delighted. She could see another smile come over his face.

“Now, as a reward, I will awaken you. FIVE—you feel yourself drifting less, and beginning to come back... FOUR—you continue your journey back, slowly beginning to wake up... THREE—you are becoming slightly aware of your surroundings... TWO—you are now aware of your surroundings, and you are nearly awake... ONE, you are now awake, and can comfortably open your eyes.”

He opened his eyes and looked around.

She immediately started speaking, as if finishing a conversation that was already underway. “Well thank you for the suggestions. I really appreciate your time.”

“No problem. I’m very glad that I could offer you my assistance. I’m absolutely certain that if you take my suggestions, your grade will improve as you want it to.”

“I’m sure it will, Marty.”

He jerked slightly at the sound of that name, but somehow it seemed to fit, so he didn’t voice any objection.

“I’m absolutely certain my grade will improve, now that we’ve had our little talk,” she said confidently.

“Yes,” he said, finding himself in complete agreement. “I’m sure it will.” And he returned to his office with a confident skip to his step.

She just smiled and watched him walk away, knowing she had mastered a skill that would contribute immeasurably to her success for the rest of her life.
